A book about a Russian writer, Nicholas Russel (Nikolai Konstantinovich Sudzilovskii) who traveled through California from San Francisco to Soapweed in 1891 and wrote an unvarnished account of campers and cranks, country dances and cutthroat capitalism. An English translation of his writing makes up the first part of this book. Russel's original travelogue was translated from the Russian by Sara Fenander. The second part of the book is a portrait of the text's author and his history. Illustrated with black and white photographs throughout. Endnotes, 179p.. Trade Paperback.
