Yet, despite her success at midlife, she spent her last years struggling to make ends meet and was virtually unknown by the time of her death. In this biography - the first full-scale life of Harris since 1955 and the first to utilize unpublished autobiographical writings and confidential letters - Valerie Raleigh Yow brings Harris back into the spotlight, revealing an extraordinary woman who thrived artistically while living a quite ordinary life. L'Amour Sous le Masque: Une enquête sur la vie féminine (Love Beneath the Mask: A Survey of Female Life)

By Lanval, Marc

Brussels, Belgium: Les Editions Du Laurier, 1938. A5 - A French language edition trade paperback book in good condition.A clean, sound copy in tan wraps with minor overall shelf with browning of the paper. 'L'Amour Sous le Masque: Une enquête sur la vie féminine' (Love Beneath the Mask: A Survey of Female Life). Men appear to know women and assume the right at all times to speak for them. If they are so confident in this it is because there are so few popular women writers who analyze their own feelings (circa 1937) or else who flatter these 'masters of the hour'. Men state an opinion that is not representative of what women actually think and that women actually keep their true opinions to themselves. The author of this book, whose work on Social Sexology is well known, asked a thousand women from all social classes, of all philosophical and political opinions, a series of questions concerning the role of women in society and in the family, as well as in private life in and out of marriage. 568 women responded to his survey. In this book they reveal, with touching frankness, their own experiences, feelings, joys, sufferings and views on major social problems of the moment: sexual morality, prostitution, sterilization, homosexuality, frigidity, exhibitionism, the roles of men and of women, their sexual and moral behavior, marriage reform, the secret causes of divorce, sexual frigidity, etc. This book, with rare objectivity, makes this stunning and original documentation available to researchers, physicians, educators, religious leaders, politicians, and men and women for whom social progress is not an empty word. It develops and brings into question many of the erroneous ideas that have been held in good faith about twentieth century women. Marc Lanval was an active member of the 'Sociéte de Sexologie de Paris' (Sexology Society of Paris) and President of the Mouvement Hélois (a naturist group). Winner of the 1937 Paris Silver Medal for Art, Sciences and Letters (Lauréat Médaille d'Argent 1937). Sold with an advertising leaflet. 5.7"x7.6", 208 pages, table des matières (table of contents). Satisfaction garantie (satisfaction guaranteed).. French Language Edition. Trade Paperback. Fresh Lipstick: Redressing Fashion And Feminism

By Linda M. Scott

New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2005. AD2 - A first edition (stated with complete numberline) hardcover book SIGNED and dated by author on the front free endpaper in very good condition in very good dust jacket that is mylar protected. Dust jacket and book have some bumped corners and light shelf wear. Fresh Lipstick shakes feminist fashion down to its Birkenstocks. 9.5"x6.5", 358 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Linda M. Scott wants to put an end to the belief that American women have to wear a colorless, shapeless uniform to achieve liberation and equality. A pointed attack on feminism's requisite style of dress, Fresh Lipstick argues that wearing high heels and using hair curlers does not deny you the right to seek advancement, empowerment, and equality. Scott asserts that judging someone on her fashion choices is as detrimental to advancement as judgments based on race, nationality, or social class. Fashion is an important mode of personal expression, not an indication of submission. She demonstrates that feminism's dogged reduction of fashion to sexual objectification has been motivated by a desire to control other women, not free them. This push for power has produced endless conflict from the movement's earliest days, hindering advances in women's rights by promoting exclusion. It is time for the "plain Jane" dress code of the revolution to be lifted, allowing all women to lead, even those wearing makeup and Manolos. Marching through 150 years of American dress history, Scott rips down feminism's favorite positions on fashion-from the power of images to the purpose of makeup. The illustrative examples-from flappers to Twiggy to body-piercing-are often poignant, occasionally infuriating, but always illuminating and thought-provoking. With Fresh Lipstick, Linda Scott gives women the ammunition to settle the fashion debate once and for all. She challenges feminists to move beyond appearances and to return their focus to the true mission of the movement: equality for all women everywhere.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
