I have no reference to show this as first, but as it follows "Tennessee" and precedes the later writing in being publicly available it seems correct. No additional printings are listed, both title page and copyright page show dates of 1866. 224 pages, text complete. Hard cover boards are a textured, blind stamped green with aged gilt lettering of spine. The boards have notable splotching (especially the back) ripple and edge bump, but relatively decent, external hinging appears stout. The first end sheet, pale blue, has a Spencerian penciling of prior owners name. 3 pages Title page, page prior, TOC have small corrected lower dog ear. The blue end sheets and paste downs are rather foxed as are adjacent sheets, balance of text very mildly so with one fore-edge stain that has affected the margins of several pages. While this has a 1st edition statement in place, given that the jacket has no price I am reasonably sure it is a book clubbing from the firsts unaltered plates. As many will know a price is rarely but sometimes seen on a BCE, but, I have never seen an unpriced US trade edition dust jacket where the publisher was a commercial enterprise unless it WAS a BCE and therefore a false first. No debossing present. Book in decent shape (date penned and xmas card laid on first endsheet). Fore edge deckle, top edge pale yellow, 380 pages. Book otherwise unmarked.
