NY: Barse & Hopkins, 1909. Hardcover. Good/None. Average little book, penned over owner name first endsheet. Customary age wear, unmarked binding sound. Excuse the lecture that follows, but, there is some clarification required. Service was a Non-US writer, writing poetry on Canadian subjects, whose publisher, in Canada was Briggs of Toronto in this era, they did a 1909 HC first with dust jacket that is highly prized. Apparently in 1909 B&H and Stern both did US versions of the work, the B&H was done with a dust jacket (usually necessary to have if so made for a high value sale) the Stern perhaps not. Mandeville's 89 guide says 1909, B&H, 137 page, top edge gilt, edition not specified. Our book lacks the T.E.G. and gives Stern as holder of the 1909 copyright. Boston, US: Osgood, Ticknor Fields, 1876. Later Printing . Hardcover. Very Good-/No Jacket. A lovely old hard cover with rich stamping, blind, gilt and black, on both spine and front cover. Trace abrasion wear to head/foot of spines, beveled boards with the odd tiny scar. Text is lightly age darkened, handsome dark green pastedowns and endsheets. Front endsheet rather foxed, frontispice is portrait of Whittier with tissue guard in place. Laid in the book was a gorgeous silk bookmark. Also a news clipping by daughter of Mary Quantrille claiming her mother was the model for Frietschie of the poem. The clipping is very age darkened, undated, though on it's back, seems to discuss the settlement of the Franco-Prussian war. both will accompany the book.

London/NY: Verso, 1991. 2nd Edition . Trade Paperback. Near Fine/No Jacket. Newish trade paperback copy, spine uncreased, covers unscuffed. Translator Michael Caesar, previously done in Italian and a much earlier English version. Boards holding at hinges and they are ornamented in rich Arabic style. X-libris plate 1st pastedown, 1st end sheet, done in light paper has creasing and tears. Last pastedown has 2 small penned notes and hinge is split but minimally so with tiny gap showing, but holding. NY: J.H. Turney, 1831. Not Stated . Full-Leather. Fair/No Jacket. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. This listing is for three titlles, sold as a group at the listed price with one-book priced media mail domestic shipping. First listed is "Paradise Lost," 5 3/4 x 3 1/4," 283 pages. A little, old book of considerable aged charm. The exterior leather hinges are cracked top to bottom, but the leather covered boards are in place and holding. The spine is ornately worked in gilt, though it is somewhat worn off. The text has considerable foxing throughout, 1st and 2nd endsheets have old owner name penning and 1831 date. There is considerable board tip abrasion, through the leather, and the boards have some scar and nick, age appropriate. It has been stored in acid free sleeve since we acquired it.
