Description:
A brief note, 'Easter Greetings' from your friend, Wm Lyon Phelps, 1937 to Ms Sarah J Newland. Some folds present otherwise a nice piece. Would go well with a Pheps Novel or book.
William Lyon Phelps (January 2, 1865 New Haven, Connecticut - August 21, 1943 New Haven, Connecticut) was an American author, critic and scholar. He taught the first American university course on the modern novel. He was a well-known speaker who drew large crowds. He had a radio show, wrote a daily syndicated newspaper column, lectured frequently, and published numerous popular books and articles.
Early life and education
Phelps' father Sylvanus Dryden Phelps was a Baptist minister. William as a child was a friend of Frank Hubbard, the son of Langdon Hubbard, a lumber merchant who founded Huron City, Michigan. Phelps earned a B.A. in 1887, writing an honors thesis on the Idealism of George Berkeley. He earned his A.M. in 1891 from Yale and in the same year his Ph.D. from Harvard. He taught at Harvard for a year, and then… Read More

Description:
A letter from Gordon Bennett, the New York Herald, to C. H. Meltzer a correspondent to cover the 4th Railroad Congress to be held in St. Petersburg on August 20th, 1872 in which Bennett is going to vacation and show up. He is writing this letter from his Paris apartment at 190 Avenue des Champs Elysees...….This letter has some stains and edge tears and as you can see from the pictures it has some conservator's repairs as well. Tearing at the creases but does mention the possible interview with General Annenkoff (see below for brief on Annenkoff). Folds present but a very nice letter. No information is available on the 4th Railroad Congress in St. Petersburg but none the less a rare and important railroad history document...despite its creases, tears and stains. Photos are NOT included.
James Gordon Bennett, Jr. (May 10, 1841 – May 14, 1918) was publisher of the New York Herald, founded by his father, James Gordon Bennett, Sr., who immigrated from Scotland. He was generally known as Gordon Bennett… Read More

Title: Eleazar Smith biographical sketch. Creator: Dickinson, Thomas A. Typed in Lawrence, Massachusetts while he was at Steelman & Fuller.
Inclusive dates: 1881
Abstract:The Eleazar Smith biographical sketch is Thomas A. Dickinson's 1881 transcription of Smith's memoir, originally written in 1828. Smith described his experiences as a militiaman during the Revolutionary War, as well as his work as an inventor and machinist in Medfield and Walpole, Massachusetts. Eleazar Smith was born in Medfield, Massachusetts, on April 1, 1755. He had little to no formal education and made a living creating and repairing clocks and other machines, such as devices for making pins and nails, and for setting card teeth. In the summer of 1776, he enlisted in the Medfield militia. He was initially stationed at Ticonderoga, New York, where he was court-martialed on suspicion of counterfeiting currency in the fall of 1776; he later participated in a march to Rhode Island, where he deserted in October 1777. Smith married… Read More

Descon, William Scarsh (circa 1840's), Unknown author. "A Nineteenth Century Eccentric: The horse racing life of Fulwar Craven (1782-1860)". A 22 page manuscript, never published as we can find. Details the life and times of Fulwar Craven, a spectacular horseman, gambler and businessman in the sphere of horse racing in the UK. Also included is one colored image of Craven, the second earlier image of him as an officer IS NOT INCLUDED."Eccentricity was a favorite whim of the Beaus of the Regency- I had nearly laid prose, but I think it was something more than that- and eccentrics were to be found taking a prominent place in Society when the nineteenth century was well on its way. When they took in sport as they generally did, they were sportsman of the best and the hunting field and the race course owes many a stirring anecdote to men like the Earls of Barrymore and their contemporaries and immediate successors. A notable man in his day was Mr. Fulwar Craven of Chilton. He was a good all round sportsmen… Read More

Elisa (Elizabeth) Edes (Brown) Hickling (Wife) (1825-1916). There is a burial plot in Boston with Elizabeth Hickling but there is no date of death. She married Charles Hickling in 1841 and their son was born in 1845. There is also a suggestion in this writing that she also had another child and lost that child.

This brief note on Morton and Bliss Stationary and signed by Levi P. Morton with references to William M. Clark, the Secretary State for the State of Colorado, and Mr. Lafe Pence as well as Perry Belmont and J. W. Hinckeley were all probably involved in the Walker Company, a private company floated by Belmont and Hinckeley and others. A very rare document naming several prominent politicians obviously involved in business together. Levi Morton was successful as a financier, establishing the large Wall Street banking firm of L. P. Morton and Company. In the 1870s the firm, by then known as Morton, Bliss and Co., helped refinance the national debt Morton moved into politics and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1878. Three years later, President James Garfield appointed him U.S. minister to France.
