Whiting to David Emes; regarding "...one certain Lott of Land - Lying in the township of Whitingham County of Windham State of Vermont. being Number 8 in Whitings Grants so called."; the document witnessed on the 9th of July 1794, witnessed by Ruth Gay, Ruth Butter, Nathan H. Whiting and with the Justice of the Peace signature at bottom right of Noah Webster Sr., father of the famous American lexicographer; Noah Webster (1722-1813) served in the French and Indian War and a captain on the 'alarm list' for men over forty-five, in the American Revolution; with the original paper-covered wax seal present; back of document with the note of Jabez Foster the Town Clerk for Whitingham, recording the exchange in the town; Whitingham is perhaps most famously noted as the birthplace of Brigham Young, the Mormon prophet and founder of Salt… Read More

Ledger sheet dated Oyster Bay Oct 25th 1815 Daniel Cheshire doing this work for William Wright; content listing for pieces of leather, pair of Morocco uppers, pair of Morocco Bindings, pair of Leather Bindings, making, mending shoes, boots, giving dates of work and prices, account paid in full; approx. 7 1/2" x 9" size; some edge, tips wear. old fold lines to paper, some splitting; overall, in good condition; and interesting Oyster Bay Long Island community, commercial history & reference; an interesting speculation if the "bindings" referred to may concern the binding of books, possible given Cheshire's obvious familiarity with aspects of the leather work trade.. Good.

Jones, Daniel Feeks, James Hegeman presiding over the case; stating, among else: "...Coles Craft...Saith that on the 24th day of December 1824 - that Jacob Baldwin and Robert Ludlam were pushing each other about the store of Richard Cock and Samuel (last name illegible) and that Jacob Baldwin struck him the said Coles Craft, a blow on the face, and threatened to flogg him if he took the law of him..." continuing with a disputatiously various group of testimony as to who hit who in this fight; listed are the subpoena and constable expenses and the case's docketing information on the back; 8" x 12 1/2" size approx.; a sadly violent case, however interesting in that there is some mention of local businesses, both for the court of sessions and the locality of the "affray" itself; some edgewear, browning along folds & spotting; still, very good condition and an interesting Long Island judicial… Read More

Schlager; early days, charter signers for the line, steam cars, the ups and downs of the development of the system, addition of branches and lines of transportation, commuter considerations and a final section "What's Ahead for the Seventies?" giving the news of large equipment orders, grade crossing eliminations, construction of new stations, tunnels from Queens to Manhattan, airport access, "...twin-powered gas turbine/electric commuter car capable of high performance of either electrified or non-electrified right-of-way..." and more; about 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" size; stock; light wear, little darkening; very good condition, interesting Long Island Rail Road ephemeral item from the 1970s, interesting 'snapshot' view of the… Read More

Newtown New York, 1852. Manuscript map; 14" x 17" approx. size; depicting 11 acre parcel of land, part of which was bounded by the shoreline of Flushing Bay and along which ran the Astoria & Flushing Turnpike Road; at lower left corner is a list of the surveyor's Field Notes, giving dimensions and layout of the piece, "...Protracted by a scale of two chains to an inch."; ink turning sepia-brown; old edgewear and holing olong old lines; repaired on back with manuscript tissue-tape; somewhat darkened; all text visible and readable, accomplished in a good hand; interesting Newtown, Long Island real estate development history ephemera from the mid-part of the 19th century. . Collection includes c. 70 individual items; mostly involved with clearing the estates of James Wright and that of Nathaniel Pearsall; with many of the documents involving both of these families and heirs from each; interesting accounts of estate contents, will bequests, debts being paid; Pearsall appears to have been a wagon maker and this is reflected in various documents; James Wright seems to have been an attorney or legal advisor and is also an executor for some of the materials; there are documents relating to the estate of Israel Wright and other relations as well; various paper sizes and qualities; some wear and soiling, old fold lines; a few of the documents with old tax-stamps still affixed; about 1/2 dozen of the James Wright receipts' writing going pale, still legible; overall, in good to very good condition and a good micro-glimpse of these family's fortunes and legal arrangements on Long Island in the middle part of the 19th century. . Interesting content; agreement made in 1863 with these gentlemen from Riverhead apparently taking over the use of a threshing machine that had been siezed by the constable; approx. 8" x 12" ; two sides, with old seals, witnessed by Daniel W. Reeve and signed by Wells & Wood; with the 25 cent Inter. Revenue stamp, dated in ink; old fold lines, some edge, tips wear, still very legible; very good condition, interesting Long Island occupational & community history.. Very Good.

Albany New York: Weed, Parsons & Company, 1864. Folding map printed in blue tones on thin paper; approx. 25" x 30 1/2" size; with a decorative border and inset of a steam locomotive in full throttle traveling cross-country; also with inset list of 'Rail Roads in Operation" with various lengths of roads; map gives rail lines, indications of bituminous coal findings, canals, city, town, county designations; one part of the border line partially chipped away, old holing along fold lines, no loss, closed tear along one panel; some light foxing, spotting, unobtrusive; no covers; the map in good condition, a nice survival and decorative, of the railroads to be found in New York State during the Civil War period.. Good.

The Irish leader, Parnell, had demanded a review of the decision to execute three Irishmen convicted of the murders. The cabinet decided to reject his call, but Hicks Beach changed his mind and offered a judicial review, thereby provoking wide dismay in the Conservative Party..." John Morley had found that at the India Office he was remembered as an outstanding minister.
