Part of the Badminton Series of Sports and Pastimes conceived by the 8th Duke of Beaufort (whose children invented the game of badminton, at Badminton House, during the wretched winter of 1863; he also, in the manner only of a true aristocrat, is said to have presented Queen Victoria with evidence that he had a better claim to the throne than she; the Queen thanked him and threw the evidence into the fire).
