Cartoons of the Great War 1914-1916

By Mac" (Howard Wood MacKinney)

Cape Times Limited, Cape Town, 1917. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. signed. Signed by Author(s)120 pages (complete). Portrait size. In general benign, easy condition. Signed on the frontispiece page by McKinney (full name). The signature is in good, fulsome, unfaded condition. Numbered 97 of a limited edition of 250 copies. Firm board covers. These are marked, worn, spotted and stained. There is wear to the corners and the head and foot of the spine. Yet, they are robust and sturdy. Within, the contents have wear and there are some occasional light closed tears to the foot spine edge of pages. The cartoons and text and security are unaffected. The patterned front and end papers are as if from a bourgeois parlour. The frontispage has a lengthy closed tear from the foot. The cartoons are principally imperial in attitude with a sound patriotism. Some have, naturally, a South African aspect with campaigns in South West and Eastern German Africa. The pages are tanned by age about the edges. The bodies are mild, assured, pleasing and agreeably healthy in spirit and reality. The pages are firm. A copy to give much enjoyment. fk

By Young, Brigadier Peter (ED)

Purnell for BPC Publishing Ltd., London with Imperial War Museum, 1970. No Binding. Fair/No Jacket. 27 pages (complete). Benign, used but secure. We are now about as far from the Somme historically, as the Somme was from Waterloo. Photography and the scale of devastation has helped maintain the shocking rawness of the assault. The covers are worn, creased but sure. Within, the pages have evidence of wear but have a clarity of history that is still shocking. The pages are clear, clean, certain. fk
