Description:
Northampton, MA, 1902 - 1903. Letters and Manuscripts. Some tears and wrinkles; two letters are laid down on cardboard. Very Good condition overall. Superb collection of material by this former Confederate soldier and important, neglected writer who paved the way for modern Southern writers such as Faulkner and Welty in dealing with the pervasive issue of race. Includes 9 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED (ALSs) to Confederate officer Alexander Porter Morse; 1 AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to publisher Charles Scribner; 2 AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPTS SIGNED (AMSs) addressed to Morse's children; and 2 TYPED LETTERS, unsigned, from Morse to Cable; along with 5 envelopes addressed in Cable's hand. The letters mostly concern Cable's work and his interest in Morse's experiences in the Civil War. The letter from Cable to Scribner is one of introduction for Morse. Some excerpts: "I have begun another cavalry story of New Orleans and Vicksburg, and I want to sit you down in my library and make you talk. Oh dear! how can I… Read More

Letter. Near Fine. Four-page letter on a 10-1/2" x 8-1/4" sheet folded in fours. It appears that this is the last four pages of a longer letter of unknown length, SIGNED by “Lieut. J. Glendinning” to an unknown recipient. Much content including discussion about the 12th Army Corps under Union General Henry W. Slocum. In part: "All of the supplies from Washington reach here by boat and thence transport by cars to Falmouth opposite Fredericksburg which is 16 miles distant." He speaks of the variety of people--some happy, some sad--that he sees here: "Twas the other night whilst having in charge a detail of men working on the Dock, a lad came forward & wanted the assistance of 4 or 5 men to help him on the boat with a box-- he had been to Fredicksburg [sic] and was now returning with his deceased Father and this is what the box contained. Poor boy! I thought, how sad must be the home to which you are going." He describes empty coffins piled high on the wharf. "Nothing keeps me in the army but a sense… Read More

Description:
1862. Hardcover. Spine rubbed. Overall a Very Good and fascinating compilation. Large folio (16" x 21-1/2") bound in half sheep and marbled boards. Includes a number of triple sheets. Extensive reportage of the war with numerous maps throughout. In addition to the war news, the papers have ads and other news. Bound in at the front is a rather scarce broadside: "The New Year's Address of the Newsmen of the New York Herald" illustrated around the border with portraits of Lincoln and various cabinet members and generals. The broadside has a few small library stamps; otherwise, it and the newspapers are generally clean with only occasional browning and a handful of long horizontal tears with no loss. While one occasionally sees individual Civil War issues of this paper offered for sale, rarely does a run, even this short (though more than 2" thick), appear on the market.
