Illustrated with 131 full-page chromolithograph plates as well as numerous full-page black-and-white plates and text engravings illustrating all facets of life in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Text in French. Each volume with the bookplate of Lovis Childs Madeira, designed by Walter M. Aikman, on the front pastedown.

Full gilt-decorated red morocco leather by Zaehnsdorf with gilt rules and gilt-decorated boards and spine; gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. Notes by Anatole France. Portrait by Louis Monzès after Devéria. In addition to the binding being signed by Zaehnsdorf at the bottom of the inside front cover, this copy also bears a small gilt medallic mark on the inside rear board, used by the binder "as a quality mark on the superior bindings produced by the firm" (Broomhead, Frank: THE ZAEHNSDORFS (1842 - 1947). CRAFT BOOKBINDERS, page 73).
