The format is 235 x 155 mm until October 1976, and 257 x 174 mm thereafter. Besides the pre-1953 issues, the missing numbers are: Volume 90, No. 3 (July 1973) and the final number of 1999 (October). This guide is far more than a compilation of checklists for individual reserves in the area of Greater Durban: it contains much information on habitats, directions to the nature reserves, and special species to anticipate while birding. The authors are experienced naturalists and leaders of birding groups in KwaZulu-Natal. .

Its shallow waters and adjacent habitats provide important feeding, roosting and breeding habitat for a variety of waterbirds, especially considering that there are virtually no estuaries or river mouths along literally hundreds of kilometres of coastline on either side of the estuary. The importance of the Orange River estuary was identified several years ago and the wetland was consequently designated as a Ramsar Site, the only such wetland in the Northern Cape." .

Winterbottom says of this book: "It fills a real gap in our literature, both Bolster's and my own books on the area, besides being on a more modest scale, having been out of print for many years." Professor Winterbottom also sets aside his reservations about photographs serving as identification tools for birds, mentioning that the shots selected "have contrived to show the essentials without spoiling the picture." .
