Very good condition. Afrikaans text. .

Edges of wrappers somewhat curled; slight trace of damp-stain to bottom edge and fore-corner. Good to very good condition. "In view of her stature in the world of South African art, and the fact that she is among the most gifted women yet born in South Africa, it is surprising that so little has been published on Irma Stern, and that there is nothing which even remotely resembles a satisfactory biography. ... The biographical study ... which is herewith presented ... concerns only the years up to 1933, a well-defined period in Irma Stern's life for which there is abundant written material in the Library; ... it is intended specifically to be of use to the reader and researcher who cannot read German and is not acquainted with the German world in which Stern grew up and developed as an artist ..." .

By Schoeman, Karel (translator and editor)

(Pretoria: Protea Boekhuis, 2002) 1919825525. 8vo; turquoise boards, lettered in white on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 255, incl. index; contemporary illustrations. .

Die kort sendingloopbaan van Sophia Burgmann, 1805 - 1812

By Schoeman, Karel

(Cape Town: South African Library, 1994) 0869681109. South African Library General Series, Number 20. 210 x 148 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 97, incl. index; contemporary illustrations in text. Near-fine condition. Afrikaans text.

Slight curl to edges of dustwrapper, with trace of foxing to reverse; edges of boards slightly rubbed. Very good condition. Afrikaans text. .

"Porter's Touwfontein letters are published firstly as an insider's account of an important development in the history of South Africa, for the meeting convened by the Governor in 1845 was the beginning of a chain of events which led to the appointment of a British Resident in the Transorange in the same year, the proclamation of British sovereignty over the area in 1848 and the establishment of the Orange Free State in 1854. In addition, however, the letters also provide an entertaining and informative description of conditions in the interior of South Africa in the 1840s." .
