The Wonderful Century. Its Successes and Its Failures

Although we cannot guarantee this to be in the Author's own hand, we feel there to be sufficient points identical to elements of his earlier signature [such as, for example that printed at the foot of the portrait photo frontispiece plate] possibly to indicate the Doctor's ownership of the volume after its acquisition in 1898 when he would have been 75/76.. Signed?. First Edition. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. 8vo..

By Carey, The Rev. Carteret Priaulx. M.A., Incumbent of St. John's, Guernsey

London: Werthheim, MacIntosh, and Hunt, 1858 Hardback, 160mm x 260mm tall (6.25" x 10.25" approx.). Pp xvi, 486, with 80 text figs, plus a multi-folding map and and a double-folding illustration from the original illustration of the funeral procession of the Egyptian basilico-grammat, or royal scribe. From the libraries, firstly, of Charles Sarolea, whose signature appears on the front pastedown, and, secondly, Keele University, the small blind-stamp impression of which is to the lower blank margin of the title-leaf. The blank upper free margin of the folding map is dust-stained and has a small archival tape-repair, whilst the spine-label is somewhat eroded. The endpaper joints are weak, but the main text-block is clean and tight. Contemporary green cloth-covered boards rubbed to edges and corners, otherwise a good example of an exceedingly scarce book. The title continues: "and Illustrated by Extracts from Various Works on Antiquities, Geography, Science, Etc., also by Eighty Woodcuts and a Map; with Six Preliminary Dissertations, an Analytical Paraphrase, and Meisner's and Doederlein's Selection of the Various Readings of the Hebrew Text from the Collations of Kennicott and De Rossi".
