LE RIRE Journal Humoristique 3rd Series 1-52 (Jan-Dec 1919)

By :

Directeur Felix JUVEN Paris . LE RIRE was the most successsful of the many illustrated journals started in France at the end of the l9th Century. It was founded by Felix JUVEN in l894. This was a particularly auspicious time to start such an illustrated paper. Paris at ther period was a magnet for artists from all over Europe and was given a further boost after the Universal Exhibiton of l900. Many of these were fairly radical in their views adn were able to express their views through their work.. This ensured that there was an extraordinary pool of fine draughtsmen at the disposal editors of journals such as La Vie Parisienne, L'Indiscret, Journal Amusant, L.'Assiette Au Beurre and of course LE RIRE The contributors included Forain, Vallotton, Iribe, Leandre, Huard, Gerbault, Caran D'Ache, Bruneslleschi Bac Mirandre, Metivet, Galanis, Willette , Kupka, Juan Gris, Jaques Villon and many others. The subject matter spans a vast range from the whimsical to the satirical; from the unkind to the absurd. Probably the most common subject might come under the general title of "The Battle of the Sexes"(Marriage, flirting, family life, exploitation of workers etc) . Each issue of l6 or 20 pages ; the contents mostly consisted of humorous drawings.. But the most striking feature are the full -page coloured drawing to the front and back covers and in most issues two further cloured pages inside. This volume in half green cloth with marbled boards . One page loose in first issue. Postage charged at cost

"Pictures of Life and Character from the Collection of Mr Punch"

By LEECH John:

Bradbury & Evans l886/1887 . A massive work, three volumes bound in one (280, 274, 268 pages), perhaps all of Leechs work for Punch (excluding the Political cartoons) from l842 to his early death in l864. Although Leech is for some associated mainly with Hunting through his illustrations for the novels of Surtees his most enduring work is his huge contribution to PUNCH. In addition to his many full page Political cartoons , the sketches reproduced here give wonderfully vivid account of the hazards of middle-class life in Victorian Britain, the dangers of social climbing (and falling) all the absurdities, and pretentions and misunderstandings associated with families, marriage, children, servants, class distinctions ( and in particular the way in which all these nuances are manifested in the Hunting Field!) A Magnificent collection. His vision is full of affection and understanding. A very nice copy . in half morocco with gilt panelled spine amd marbled endpapers 3 vols

LE TEMOIN Nos l-69 (Last published)

By IRIBE Paul (Editor):

10 Dec l933- 30 Juin l935 Folio 8pp per issue except 48-56 which were i a larger broadsheet format. . Satirical review started as a reaction to the evils of Communism, Nazism , American Influence and the perceived feebleness of the French govt. - hypernationalist, right-wing, anti-democratic stuff - beautifully presented. Iribe wrote most of the material himself and provided most of the drawings - witty and elegant as one expects from him. As a sustained outpouring of political and polemical satire in a very personal and powerful form LE TEMOIN is one of the Great Twentieth Century journals in the genre. Iribe was very close to the Couturier CHANEL and used her image to represent Marianne (The spirit of La France) throughout the work. Her austere profile and red cap appear throught the pages. LE TEMOIN was the third of the Political Reviws created by Iribe, There was the first series of LE TEMOIN (l906-1908) followed by LE MOT (in collaboration with Jean Cocteau) - extraordinary images - anti-German and anti-War. This set is in original parts as issued, in good condition . In this set the following issues are in facsimile 2,5,7,8,11
