By :

Directeur Felix JUVEN Paris . LE RIRE was the most successsful of the many illustrated journals started in France at the end of the l9th Century. It was founded by Felix JUVEN in l894. This was a particularly auspicious time to start such an illustrated paper. Paris at ther period was a magnet for artists from all over Europe and was given a further boost after the Universal Exhibiton of l900. Many of these were fairly radical in their views adn were able to express their views through their work.. This ensured that there was an extraordinary pool of fine draughtsmen at the disposal editors of journals such as La Vie Parisienne, L'Indiscret, Journal Amusant, L.'Assiette Au Beurre and of course LE RIRE The contributors included Forain, Vallotton, Iribe, Leandre, Huard, Gerbault, Caran D'Ache, Bruneslleschi Bac Mirandre, Metivet, Galanis, Willette , Kupka, Juan Gris, Jaques Villon and many others. The subject matter spans a vast range from the whimsical to the satirical; from the unkind to the absurd. Probably the most common subject might come under the general title of "The Battle of the Sexes"(Marriage, flirting, family life, exploitation of workers etc) . Each issue of l6 or 20 pages ; the contents mostly consisted of humorous drawings.. But the most striking feature are the full -page coloured drawing to the front and back covers and in most issues two further coloured pages inside. This volume nicely boundin red half leather (postage at cost)

A Series of Picturesque Views of Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in Great Britain and Ireland

By MORRIS F.O. (Texts by ) Benjamin Fawcett (Printer):

William Mckenzie 1880 Six Volumes . A very nice set of this remarkable work of colour printing . The 240 plates each showing a large country house or caslle , were printed by Benjamin Fawcett using the Baxter method. from watercolours by A.F Lydon.. Although the quality of the drawings varies , Ruari McLean declared , "the best plates are superb and of great charm and beauty " and another commentator on Fawcett's work says "his ink-tones are so subtle they have the appearance of watercolours" . The series was originally published in parts by subscription over a number of years until finally published in this form in l880 Apart from its significance as an outstanding work of colour prnting it was also a monument to Victorian social values. Each picture is accompaied by a short text - giving some of the history of the house but sometimes no more than a list of titles of the owners. The work has an air of nouveu-riche repectablilty which presumably appealed to the original subscribers. Exton Hall in Rutland, for example, is described as " a large Ellizabnethan Mansion built at various periods since l811 but as time went on, building after building was added and then in l851/2 was considerably enlarged at the cost of several thousand pounds". This great modern Victorian house had forty bedrooms. The set is bound in elaborately decorated cloth with gilt and blind-stamped decorations. In this set vol III is slightly worn att he top of the spineand vol V at the foot. and has one plate loose.. Two plates have a damp mark in the corner of the margin . The title page and preliminary leavesof Vol II are lightly foxed but overall the set is remakably bright and the plates themselves almost completety free of any spots even in the margins (As there are six volumes additional postage will be due)

"Historia de Una Mujer"

By PLANAS Eusebio:

Barcelona, Lito-tipografica de Juan Alec y Fugeral n.d. circa l880 . Folio coloured lithographed title-page and 50 coloured plates. This delightful book is one of very few on this scale produced in Spain and illustrated with such fine chromolithographs. It is a kind of female "Rakes Progress" : . amusingly presented as a moral tale on fifty large plates (20cms by 27cms) illustrating the career of a racy, raunchy and promiscuous woman; her ups and downs and final ruin.. We see her in Paris, in St Petersberg, at dances and parties, with various men .We find her at last being received into a nunnery where she loses no time in flirting with the priest hearing her confession. Planas' drawings are full of life and the colours are rich and strong. Many copies have succumbed to the framers knife and it is now hard to find . The first four plates are very lightly foxed in the margins. otherwise a very nice copy in original decorated cloth publishers binding

GIL BLAS Supplement Illustree

By STEINLEN (Chief contributor):

Paris 1894-1896 . Three complete years bound together The front cover of each issue is a full-page coloured drawing of a scene illustrating the short story inside and the back page gives the words and music of a contemporary popular song , The stories illustrated are almost all on a blatantly sexual theme often involving bad behavious and loose morals. For the first ten years almost all the illustrations were by Theophile Steinlen,, the artist who withToulouse Lautrec most famously captures the mood of the l890s in Paris - the gaity of the night life and the boulveards contrasted with the pathos of the exploited shp-girls and laundresses. Steinlens sympathetic drawings of women are particularly fine. The journal is note-worthy for the restricted use of colours in the illustations, the earlier years mainly in red, black and blue, and from l894 a wider, livelier spectrum . These three years are bound together in red half calf in nice conditin) .
