A Very Good copy, with a little darkening to wrapper margins.


Sussex Eye Hospital Cookery Book. Special Appeal.

Brighton: Colrand Publications, c.1936 First edition. Undated but from contents probably 1936 or 1937. Paperback: light blue card wrappers lettered in dark blue in art deco style to front wrapper, with advert to back. Thread and glue binding. Small quarto format. 64pp. With b&w photo of the new Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton (which opened in 1935), and photo of the president, with introductory text by her (this book was published as part of its fundraising appeal), plus 4pp of information about the hospital, including 2 more photos. Recipes throughout, with some commercial adverts between. A Good only copy. Some grubby marks and spotting to wrappers, which have detached from the contents due to glue drying, and have tear to spine. Pages well-held together and clean.

Paperback: card wrappers with montage of colour photos, small oblong format. 224pp. With line drawings throighout in text, including 50 'cookstrips': recipes shown in graphic form like a cartoon strip. Text on basic French home cooking, including methods, cuts of meat, advice, including on wine. Gives a context to character Harry Palmer being a cookery enthusiast in the Ipcress File. Good+ condition. Pages very good, largely clean and well-bound, with minor staining to some lower margins, and tanned edges. Wrappers worn and creased, with small abrasions and marks.

Norwich: Norfolk Federation of Women's Institutes, 1930 Presumed First edition. Paperback: light blue paper wrappers lettered in shades of mid and dark blue, stapled binding, octavo. 76pp, with some blanks after recipes and at end for notes etc. Each section has a brown card divider with labelled tab at fore-edge. Foreword by Dr. F.W. Burton-Fanning on healthy diet, followed by main recipes section, with pictorial advert by Brown & Polson, then nursing hints to mothers by same doctor. Some of the blanks at end have press-cutting recipes pasted in and some written notes on a recipe for 'Jack in the Hedge ointment.' A Fair copy: the pages are generally good and clean, but the staples are very rusty and have stained the paper around, and this shows through on the front and back wrappers. Wrapper edges frayed.

Paperback: grey paper wrappers lettered in black, stapled binding, octavo. 90pp, with some blanks at end for notes etc. Text consists of recipes interspersed with trade adverts. A Good copy: wrappers soiled and with frayed edges and small losses to spine, the pages are generally very good and clean, well-bound though some rust to the staples, and some corners turned down.

Green cloth over bevelled boards with green title to spine and white stamped titles to front, with green stramped decorative borders. Decorative endpapers. 195pp, quarto. With b&w photos of cakes in text, plus some line drawings. With many recipes. A Good+ copy. Covers rather worn and with various marks (including old stain back) but front lettering is bright. Contents generally very good, occasional mark or foxing spot. Binding sound though prelims a little slack and back internal hinge has cracks at endpapers.

Produced by the School Management Dept. of the London School Board. Good+ condition. Light marks to covers, heavy browning to endpapers, otherwise clean and presentable for a book of this use.
