Description:
Chicago: Dunlop, Sewell & Spalding, 1865. 19pp. Original printed wrappers, disbound, partly loosened. Minor wear, Good+. [bound with] THE PRESENT AND PROSPECTIVE SCARCITY OF MINISTERS. Broadside, printed on bright yellow paper, signed by EG Hammond and E W Blatchford, urging the importance of the Appeal. Our national life, civilization, and faith have "all been assailed by the shock and ruin of this war. All require renovation and new creation." Moreover, "had the church of Christ been faithful," the War would have been avoided. "A true ministry in Southern pulpits, sustained by a clear testimony from the whole body of Northern Christians, would have rendered such a wide apostacy and conspiracy impossible." The vastness of the national territory ["a whole South is to be opened for a free gospel"], the ongoing waves of immigration-- all establish the need for ministers of the gospel. Description:
Chicago: Thompson & Day, 1860. Original printed wrappers [old institutional stamp], stitched. 55, [1] pp. Light wear, Very Good. "The Bishop has been here upwards of a month, and yet no demonstration has been made on his part of a desire for reconciliation with his Clergy here, and that there has been an estrangement, no one, of course, pretends to deny." Kerfoot places the problem at the Bishop's door. "The nature of the man"-- his "tendency to close framing of bargains and contracts," "at all times leaning towards the accumulation of money"-- is behind the estrangement. Respecting the office of Bishop, Kerfoot nevertheless "cannot approve of wrong plans or devices, even when conceived by a brain covered by a mitre." Kerfoot lays out his detailed indictment against Whitehouse. FIRST EDITION. Ante-Fire Imprints 492.

Description:
[Chicago, 1872. Two pages of text on a folded sheet. margin-soiled. Good+. Probably a component of the 1872 Liberal Party, which contested Republican hegemony in a run for the Presidency with Horace Greeley as its candidate. The Republicans have lost their moral authority: "No faction governing a party by a vaste and intricate political machinery, should be permitted to absorb a majority of the popular voice on account of glorious deeds accomplished in the past..." As for the Democratic Party, "its glory has departed." Evidently unrecorded.

Description:
[Chicago?, 1857. Caption title [as issued], disbound without wrappers, 8pp. Very Good. This is the legal memorandum prepared by Chicago lawyers Gilbert, Kearney & Nelson. They represent Chicago auctioneers who challenge a Chicago ordinance "imposing a duty of one per cent on the sale of all personal property sold at auction." That tax violates the Illinois Constitution, which gives only the Illinois Legislature, not the City Council of Chicago, the power "to tax peddlers, auctioneers, brokers, hawkers, merchants, commission merchants, showmen, jugglers, inn-keepers..." Local authorities may constitutionally impose certain taxes, but only if they are "uniform," a condition concededly not met in this case. [Chicago?, 1860. Folio sheet, folded to 8.25" x 11", 4pp. Caption title [as issued]. Old folds, couple of small holes cost about a few letters. Good+. This rare and evidently unrecorded item exposes a serious rift in the Protestant Episcopal Church in Illinois. The first Letter, entitled "A New Episcopal Church," is signed by "A. Churchman." It was originally printed in the Chicago Tribune in 1853. Two additional Letters, originally printed in 'The Churchman' in October 1860, are from "Aurora" and "Illinoise| Richmond House. These pseudonymous authors, who sign their names in type, outline the dispute. This imprint was prepared during a well-publicized nine-year dispute over land purchased as the domain of the Episcopal Church in Chicago, and as the residence of Bishop Henry J. Whitehouse [1803-1874], the second Bishop of Illinois. The plan was for Whitehouse and the new Cathedral to be housed in Chicago. In America "no child, of parents however poor, of birth however exotic, of race however despised or degraded, shall grow up among us without the privilege of instruction in the first rudiments of literacy and scientific knowledge." Curtis defends post-high school education: it is not "aristocratic" or "designed for particular classes of society." Rather, higher education is "preeminently democratic, bringing the best education in the land within the reach of the poorest boy, if he have the energy, and talent, and perseverance to avail himself of their advantages." Curtis explains the mission of Knox College: "This College was designed for the laboring people of Illinois." FIRST EDITION. Ante-Fire Imprints 315 [5]. Byrd 2886 [5].
