Exceptionally scarce complete run of The Captain, the popular boys' magazine which ran from April 1999 to March 1924. 50 volumes bound in 44, with one volume (8) duplicated. Mixed bindings, mainly publisher's pictorial cloth, and in general good order throughout with just a couple poorly repaired. Toning to stock commensurate with paper age and quality; some loose pages and occasional shaken bindings, but this rare and for the most part all is sound. Wide-ranging collection of sporting stories, well-illustrated with 32 plates in each volume. Three vols rebound in red buckram, the remainder in publisher's decorated cloth. All show levels of wear but are in general good order throughout, bar two vols which show splitting to back strip. Occasional looseness to pages and plates but this minor. Some foxing and spotting, but stock quality good, so this at a minimum.
