The decorative cloth binding has gilt titles to spine and front board and bevelled edges. The spine is darkened with a little darker staining. The boards are clean with darkened edges. There is wear to the spine ends and to corners. The front free endpaper is missing and the half title has some offsetting from the pastedown endpaper. Contents: frontispiece; title; note by editor, contents, introduction, text with decorative headpieces and 5 full page black and white plates. Some pages unpaginated. 6 pp publisher's catalogue at the rear. There is occasional light marking to the first text pages and at p 120/121. Otherwise generally clean and bright. In the original red cloth binding with decorative black design to front board edges and black titles to spine. With 12 colour plates by Dulac and numerous black and white illustrations, vignettes, head and tail pieces and decorative initial capitals. The cloth binding is in very good condition with some fading to the spine and the front board close to the spine, and pulling to spine ends. There is some wear to corners. Internally there is a small Stevenson copyright stamp to the front pastedown. Contents are in very good clean condition. The free endpapers have some browning and the final page is browned. 1 page is unopened. The very occasional spot to pages.

Lacking the wrapper, however sections of the wrapper have been pasted in to the front and rear endpapers. The title page is undated but on the verso it states that this copy was made and printed in 1931. The binding is sound but the spine and board edges are darkened. There is some spotting to the foredge and the top page edges are a little grubby. Internally the book is complete and clean with light spotting, normally to margins, and occasional light marking around the stitching and on the gutter side of the plate margins. Publisher's catalogue at the rear 16 pp.

London : Macmillan & Co. Ltd, 1918 A very good copy of the special limited edition of English Fairy Tales signed by Arthur Rackham. No 110 of 500 copies. The fairy tales include Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and Jack and the Beanstalk. In full vellum binding with gilt decoration and titles to front board and spine. With 16 tipped-in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs by Arthur Rackham. Printed on 'Holbein' watermarked paper with plates mounted on paper with a woven texture. Decorative endpapers; top page edges gilt, remainder untrimmed. The binding is in good to very good condition being generally clean with bright gilt to spine and front board. The top corners are both turned. There is slight marking to the front board and spine, and some brown spotting to the top corner and corner edges of the back board. The decorative endpapers are clean without any ownership markings. The contents are complete with Rackham's signature to an initial blank and are in very good clean condition. The tissue guard to the plate at p 72 is creased; the guard at p 210 has a small tear close to the gutter; and the guard at p 282 is spotty. The corner tip to p 141 has been turned at some point, and a few later leaves have lost the very tip of the corner. A brown spot/mark appears to the top side edge at p 277-282 and reappears at p 287 before moving to the corner tip at pp 309-327. There is the very occasional light spot, with obvious spotting to the final leaf and light spotting in the gutter of the rear endpaper. The stitching is visible at p113 but the book is sound. London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1924 A good copy of the 1st trade edition in decorative silk binding with 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration, begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. The binding has gilt decoration and titles to spine and front board, both of which are sunned, fading the green silk to an olive colour, There is wear to the top and bottom of the spine and to the corners and edges, particularly the side edge of the front board. There is a small mark on the back board at the top. The decorative endpapers are present, with a small inscription from 1938 to the fep. Contents are shaken, with some stitching beginning to loosen, but they are complete and in very good clean condition.

London : Duckworth & Co, 1913 A good copy of the limited edition in gilt-decorated parchment binding with tipped-in frontispiece and 11 further tipped-in plates by Charles Robinson. This copy is number 241 of 260 copies of which 250 were for sale. The binding has a browned spine, and a lot of browning and scuffing to edges with some loss of surface at the front corners and the top back corner. There is some marking to the front board. Internally the decorative endpapers are present without inscription. The contents, including numerous designs and line illustrations by Charles Robinson are in good to very good clean condition. There are lightly creased tissue guards to plates at pp 26 and 68 and the tissue guards to plates at pp 76 and 122 have some wrinkling and browning. The mount to the plate at p76 has a slight ripple at the top. Page 47 has a turned corner tip and there is a small repaired edge tear to the bottom margin of p 54. London: Hodder & Stoughton A very good copy of the 1st trade edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 23 tipped-in colour plates, black and white illustrations and designs by Edmund Dulac. Undated but 1914. The light brown cloth binding has a printed flower design (which continues on the endpapers) overlaid with gilt decoration and titles on the front board and spine. This copy has bright decoration with some light cloth wear - to the corners and the top and bottom of the spine where there is a little fraying. There are some small marks on the back board. The floral endpapers are unmarked. Contents: frontispiece; decorative title; illustration list and text with 22 further colour plates. All the text pages have a decorative border. The tissue guard to the frontispiece is detaching at the top and there is occasional marking to the plate supports at the bottom edge (plates at pp 43, 71, 78 and 113). The plates themselves are unaffected. There is a small triangular chip missing from the bottom edge of p 59/60. A lovely example of an early twentieth century gift book. London : George Routledge and Sons A good copy of a Kate Greenaway Birthday Book - undated but circa 1880, with colour frontispiece and 11 further colour printed plates. The presentation page is filled in stating that the book was presented to Moyra Tuck from Z Sherborne and some of the dates are filled in pencil with various members of the Sherborne family. A note at the end gives a later owner - Miss B Coombs who gave her address as Brook St Hospital Ward 6 in Shooters Hill 3rd March 1918. The binding is clean with bright gilt titles. The edges and corners have some rubbing. Contents nice and clean.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1913 A good copy of the 1st trade edition of 'In Powder and Crinoline' with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous designs by Kay Nielsen. Undated but 1913. This was Kay Nielsen's first published book illustration and his reputation was such that Arthur Quiller-Couch was commissioned to find and rewrite the fairy tales to the title chosen by Nielsen. His illustrations are unique and unforgettable. This copy is in the publisher's quarter cloth binding with grey card boards. The spine has gilt titles and designs and the front board has red titles and grey illustration. The binding is sound but with the usual wear: pulling to the top and bottom of the spine and edge wear to the boards with some browning and marking. The decorative endpapers are present with some light browning and there is some repair to the front endpaper joint. Contents are complete including half title; frontispiece with tissue guard; title page on thick grey paper with red lettering; list of illustrations; preface; and text 164 pp with designs and 23 tipped in colour plates on thick grey paper with decorative guards. Contents are generally clean and the plates are in very good condition. There is sporadic and persistent browning in the gutter of the text pages around the stitching. The tissue guards to plates at pp 28 and 132 and occasional light marking on the grey paper supporting the plates. Please enquire if you would like to see further images.

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1924 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in dark blue decorative cloth binding, signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration, begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. It is a beautiful and expensive production, but the changing market for colour plate books meant that it had to have fewer colour plates than Nielsen's earlier works. This book is number 378 of 500 printed. The blue cloth binding has bright gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. The front board is bright and clean with light corner and edge wear. The spine is dulled with a lot of pulling to the top and bottom, and the back board is clean but with some scuff marks and light corner and edge wear. There is a small ink spot to the bottom page edges not visible from inside the book. The contents are complete and in very good to near fine clean condition. The book is slightly shaken and there is occasional light brown spotting in the gutter and the occasional light mark elsewhere - principally to preliminaries and end leaves.

London, New York, Bombay and Calcutta: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1907 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original light green decorative cloth binding with 8 colour plates, 20 full page black and white plates, and 22 in text illustrations. All page edges gilt. The binding has been rebacked and is clean and tight. The gilt to both the spine and front board is slightly faded. The side edge to the front board has water-marking which has resulted in a faded section and then a darkened section at the edge, and there is slight warp at the edge. The back board has a slight fade at the side edge. The decorative endpapers are present with 2 inscriptions to the fep: Ada from Uncle Jack Xmas '07, and Taffie from Jannie Xmas 1952. There is darkening to front endpaper edges and a little marking at the side edge. Both front and rear endpapers have had professional repair at the joint. Contents are complete and very clean with just the occasional light mark.

The binding is sound with fading to the spine and board edges and wear to corners. There is some light marking on both boards and some pulling to the top and bottom of the spine. Internally there is a decorative bookplate to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents are complete and generally clean. There is occasional spotting, particularly at pp 227-9 and from 318-320, and to the foredge. There is a crease to the fep. 3 of the plates have some browning/rippling/nibbling at edges - presumably where they were detached at some point. There is a small repaired edge tear at the top pf p10.

London and New York: William Heinemann; Dodd, Mead & Company, 1917 A good copy in the original decorative cloth binding illustrated by Jean de Bosschere. This was an early commission for de Bosschere, a Belgian illustrator who has been compared to Aubrey Beardsley. Contents with decorative tinted title page; 12 colour plates, 11 tinted full page plates, 14 full page black and white plates and numerous illustrations and designs in the text. The cloth binding has a bright clean front board with black designs and titles. The decorative spine is lightly faded and the plain back board has some discolouration. There is some slight fading at the top of the front board and light wear to the top and bottom of the spine and to corners. Internally the decorative endpapers are present - the rear ones have a little marking. There is a pencil note about purchase history in 1972 to the verso of the fep. Contents are in very good clean condition with just the occasional very light mark. Most of the tissue guards to the colour plates have some discolouration and there is occasional light offsetting. There is a small repaired tear to the side margin of p139 where the page was poorly opened.

New York: George H Doran Company A very good copy of the first US edition with 16 tipped in colour plates by Kay Nielsen. Undated but 1923. In the original blue cloth binding with gilt decoration to the front board and gilt titles to the spine. The Twelve Dancing Princesses is a shorter version of 'In Powder and Crinoline' which was Kay Nielsen's first proper commission as a book illustrator and was published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1913. The US edition has fewer colour plates but was redesigned by Neilsen, and is a lovely work. Contents: decorative endpapers and half title; tipped-in frontispiece; title; preface, contents and illustration list; six stories each with decorative half title, and 15 further tipped in colour plates with decorative covers. The binding is bright and clean: the front board has a slight bump to the bottom corner; the spine is slightly faded with some pulling; and the back board has a couple of small scuffs and slight indentation to the bottom edge. The contents are in very good clean condition - there is a small signature to the bottom of the rear pastedown endpaper and the stitching is just visible between pp 128/129

London: Constable & Company Ltd, 1909 A very good copy of the 1st enlarged Rackham edition of Grimm's Tales with 40 tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs. Rackham first illustrated Grimm in 1900 and this edition contains reworked and new illustrations. In newer full leather binding by Colin Kerr, an Orkney craftsman who specialised in furniture-making, wood sculpture and decorative bookbinding. He completed a number of commemorative bindings for the local Council, and, as an avid book collector, rebound older books where the binding was poor. This binding is in tan and cream leather, with titles and design to spine copying the original gilt illustration from the cloth binding. New marbled endpapers have been added. The contents are complete, and the tipped-in plates and tissue-guards are in very good clean condition. 5 plates have slight inner bottom corner tip creases. There is some light marking particularly noticeable on side margins and there are small repaired edge tears to the bottom margin of 6 pages. The second issue with Heath Robinson's work - the black and white illustrations are particularly memorable. The binding is in fair condition, with pulling to the top and bottom of the spine and bumping and wear to corners. The spine is faded. Internally there is an inscription to the fep dated 1917. The contents are in very good clean condition. There is occasional light spotting which is mostly to top margins, but is visible on the title page and noticeable at pp 48/9 and 95. The stitching is visble at p48, but the book is sound.

There is some slight indentation to the pasted picture visible in some lights. The contents are complete and very clean and bright.
