London, New York, & Bombay: Longmans, Green, & Co, 1897 A good to very good copy of an unusual tale of supremely confident infants, a sensitive dragon and wicked people. Rosamund Praeger is best known as a sculptor, but was also an artist, illustrator, poet and writer. She wrote and illustrated a number of books for children which tend to be difficult to find now. This copy is in the original paper covered boards with cloth spine, with titles and illustration to front board, and illustration to back board. There is some paper loss at the edges and corners of the boards with some professional repair. The surfaces are a bit scuffed but quite clean. There is slight bubbling to an area of the paper on the front board. The original brown endpapers are present with the blind stamp of W H Smith and Son, 1900, to the top of the fep. London: A&C Black, 1921 A superb copy of this wonderful illustrated children's book. The first edition was published in 1920 in Boston - this is the first english edition. There are 8 coloured plates, of which 1 is pasted down onto the front board. The spine is faded, and the book is a bit bent. Neat ownership inscription on front fixed endpaper. London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd, 1907 A good to very good copy of the 2nd edition of 'The Little Folks' Edition' of Alice, with 32 coloured illustrations by John Tenniel. In the original red decorative cloth binding with titles and white rabbit to front board, and titles to spine. The binding is sound and clean, with some mottling to the boards (mostly the back board), and light wear to edges (including spine joints), and corners. Internally there is an inscription dated 1907 to the fep, which also has a little pencil marking. The contents are very clean and in very good condition with the occasional light spot or mark. Scarce.

London: J Coker and Co., Ltd A good copy in the original decorative card binding with pasted colour picture of Alice with the White Rabbit. Undated but probably around 1907-15. With colour frontispiece and 7 further colour plates by Bessie Pease, and decorative borders by G P Micklewright. The binding has a red cloth spine, which is faded and worn, particularly at the top and bottom. There is edge and corner-wear to the boards. There is some slight indentation to the pasted picture visible in some lights. The contents are complete and very clean and bright.

London : Hodder and Stoughton, 1924 A good copy of a scarce work, with 12 tipped in colour plates by E J Detmold. Undated but 1924. In the original cream decorative cloth binding with gilt illustration and titles to spine and front board. This copy has been rebacked with new endpapers, so the binding is sound and tight. The front board has bright gilt decoration. It has some marking and a lot of wear to the bottom corner. The spine is dulled and slightly marked and there is wear to spine ends. The back board has some mottled marking and a repair to the top corner. The contents are generally clean, with occasional light marking and some spotting, particularly at the page edges. There is spotting to the foredge. The plates are bright and clean. Some of the tissue guards have creasing or marking. The plate opposite page 80 has some creasing at the corner. With decorative endpapers with different designs front and rear. All page edges gilt. The binding has been rebacked, relaying the original spine, so is sound and tight. The front board and spine are bright and clean with gilt decoration that is slightly dulled. Couple of paler marks on the back board. Corners rubbed with wear and slight cloth loss. The endpapers have professional repair at the joints. The free endpapers have light browning, and there is an old bookseller's blind stamp at the top of the fep. The contents are very clean with light toning to paper. There is some light marking in the side margins of pp 234 and 235.

London : Strand Publications A fair copy of Bookano No 4 with 5 pop up models. The pictorial binding is very scuffed and worn and has lost much of the picture on the spine and a large chunk of picture from the back board. Contents generally clean apart from one black and white illustration which has been part coloured in and has lost some surface. The pop ups all work: the first pop up has a bent tree which does not pop up properly, but the rest look good. Text pages generally brown toned.

London and New York: William Heinemann; Dodd, Mead & Company, 1917 A good copy in the original decorative cloth binding illustrated by Jean de Bosschere. This was an early commission for de Bosschere, a Belgian illustrator who has been compared to Aubrey Beardsley. Contents with decorative tinted title page; 12 colour plates, 11 tinted full page plates, 14 full page black and white plates and numerous illustrations and designs in the text. The cloth binding has a bright clean front board with black designs and titles. The decorative spine is lightly faded and the plain back board has some discolouration. There is some slight fading at the top of the front board and light wear to the top and bottom of the spine and to corners. Internally the decorative endpapers are present - the rear ones have a little marking. There is a pencil note about purchase history in 1972 to the verso of the fep. London: Chatto & Windus, 1945 A very good copy of Bettina's first work in good wrapper. The yellow binding has a title and the outline of a donkey in red on the front board. It is in very good clean condition with some browning to the bottom edges and light turning to corners. The contents are very clean and sound. There is slight spotting to the verso of the fep and a slight bubble to the paper on the rear pastedown endpaper. The wrap is complete and clean with wear to folds and some browning to the spine. There are some edge nibbles and small edge tears at the top edge repaired with archive tape.

London : Hodder and Stoughton A near fine copy of the 2nd Hodder edition of this classic work with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs by Kay Nielsen. Undated but circa 1915. With original red cloth with gilt illustration to front board, and new leather spine, with gilt-lined raised bands and title and illustrator labels. The binding is in near fine clean condition. The corners are lightly turned and there are a couple of very small slightly faded areas on the back board. The contents are complete and have new endpapers. The paper is lightly toned towards the edges and there is occasional very light marking mainly to the bottom margin. There is a very small repaired edge tear to the bottom edge of p246. The first plate (after the frontispiece) does not have a caption - the caption is on a plain leaf bound before it - this was clearly intentional as the pagination accounts for the extra leaf. Undated but circa 1924 (there is an ink inscription on the fep dated 1924) and the third issue of this work by Hodder. The deep yellow cloth binding has black titles and blue and black design to front board, and black titles to spine. The binding is bright and clean with slight dulling to edges. The spine is a little cocked to the front and faded, with light pulling to spine ends. The back board has some light marking in the middle. Top page edges are yellowed. There is a small area of marking at the bottom page edge not visible internally. The contents are complete and in very good clean condition with bright text and plates. The fairy tales include Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and Jack and the Beanstalk. In full vellum binding with gilt decoration and titles to front board and spine. With 16 tipped-in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs by Arthur Rackham. Printed on 'Holbein' watermarked paper with plates mounted on paper with a woven texture. Decorative endpapers; top page edges gilt, remainder untrimmed. The binding is in good to very good condition being generally clean with bright gilt to spine and front board. The top corners are both turned. There is slight marking to the front board and spine, and some brown spotting to the top corner and corner edges of the back board. London : James Nisbet and Co.,, 1885 A good to very good copy in full-leather prize binding with black and white frontispiece and 4 further black and white plates. Eleventh thousand. The binding has 'Burslem Endowed School Prize 1886' in gilt on the front board and there is a prize bookplate on the front pastedown. The spine has elaborate gilt compartments and a title label. All page edges are marbled as are the endpapers. There is some wear to the top and bottom of the spine and the spine joints (particularly at the front), and there is the odd scuff mark to the boards but the binding is very bright and clean. Contents in very good condition.

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1924 A good copy of the 1st trade edition in decorative silk binding with 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration, begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. The binding has gilt decoration and titles to spine and front board, both of which are sunned, fading the green silk to an olive colour, There is wear to the top and bottom of the spine and to the corners and edges, particularly the side edge of the front board. There is a small mark on the back board at the top. The decorative endpapers are present, with a small inscription from 1938 to the fep. Contents are shaken, with some stitching beginning to loosen, but they are complete and in very good clean condition.

London, Bombay, Sidney : George G Harrap & Co Ltd, 1931 A good copy of the 1931 reprinted edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 15 colour and 25 full page black and white illustrations by Harry Clarke. The binding is sound with fading to the spine and board edges and wear to corners. There is some light marking on both boards and some pulling to the top and bottom of the spine. Internally there is a decorative bookplate to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents are complete and generally clean. There is occasional spotting, particularly at pp 227-9 and from 318-320, and to the foredge. There is a crease to the fep. 3 of the plates have some browning/rippling/nibbling at edges - presumably where they were detached at some point. There is a small repaired edge tear at the top pf p10.

With 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration. He began the work in 1912 but the disruption caused by World War I meant that it was not published until 1924 - and although a beautiful production it could not afford the number of plates that embellished East of the Sun, West of the Moon, his previous work. The market for expensive illustrated gift books declined significantly after the War and Nielsen only illustrated two more works before moving to Copenhagen and working on set designs for the theatre. London: Constable & Company Ltd, 1909 A near fine copy of the 1st enlarged limited edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales illustrated by Arthur Rackham. 750 copies were produced and signed by Rackham, of which this is copy number 490. Issued with tipped in colour frontispiece and 39 further tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs. This copy has been recently rebound in full calf with raised bands, blind stamped designs and titles to spine, and blind stamped panelled design to the boards. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. The binding is in fine clean condition. New endpapers have been added. Contents are complete with bright clean uncreased plates. There is a slight paper ripple to the bottom corner of preliminary leaves, a couple of light creases to tissue guards, and a slight fold to the stock paper for the plate at p 236. The decorative cloth binding has gilt titles to spine and front board and bevelled edges. The spine is darkened with a little darker staining. The boards are clean with darkened edges. There is wear to the spine ends and to corners. The front free endpaper is missing and the half title has some offsetting from the pastedown endpaper. Contents: frontispiece; title; note by editor, contents, introduction, text with decorative headpieces and 5 full page black and white plates. Some pages unpaginated. 6 pp publisher's catalogue at the rear. There is occasional light marking to the first text pages and at p 120/121. Otherwise generally clean and bright. There is some splitting at the rear endpaper with some evidence of repair. A scarce work.

In the original full vellum binding with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. With tipped in frontispiece and 31 colour tipped-in plates by Warwick Goble. Goble (1862-1943) had become a resident illustrator at Macmillan and this is one of finest works. Contents are complete and in near fine clean condition. Endpapers have some browning. There is the occasional small pinprick spot in the text and some spotting on the uncut edges of the text pages. Plates are mounted on brown stock paper and are in lovely condition. The binding has lost its ties and there is some pocking to the vellum, slight marking and some scuffs.
