Original limp cloth cover somewhat faded with fraying to edges and creased corners. Poor paper quality of the title and last page resulting in heavy tone and edge chipping. Recipes with contributor's name have a strong representation of local fruits, especially citrus which Upland became known for. Lemon & Kumquat Marmalades; One-Two-Three-Four Marmalade (using grapefruit, lemon, orange & apples, 71). Many puddings including Date Nut; Grapefruit; Persimmon etc. Pickles and relishes included Fig Pickles & French Chow Chow, (59). Rink-Dam-Ditty (sic) which looks like an easier version of "Rinktum Ditty" a type of Welsh Rabbit or Tomato and Cheese on Toast, (53). Many of the adverts have a "catchy" recipe format ie, "Creighton's Recipe on How to Catch Big Fish: First -You must have a good rod. Second-An automatic reel. Third-a double tapered line. Fourth-A six-foot tapered leader. Fifth-A Jack Scott No. 14 fly. If you do not catch fish with this recipe, call Roy Creighton and have him check your tackle." Scarce. No holding on OCLC; not in Bitting; not in Culinary America. Heavily worn cover with a 2" spine split; edges with some chips and surface soil. Contents clean with some faint spots, corner tips creased and edge tone. Recipes written in narrative, most with contributor's name. Many local ads offer a look into history: Marshall Electric "There is a set (radio) within reach of every purse." . A laundry offers saving time and money by using their service: "Wash day is pretty expensive" ... pay the washwoman, feed the washwoman, buy soap, starch & bluing and extra fuel." Recipes include a variety of Cakes, Puddings including many Christmas puddings, breads, doughnuts, etc. Meat & poultry are rather sparse in comparison, with a better representation in the Meatless recipes which include a variety of seafood dishes. Holy Redeemer Catholic Church was built in 1884. Marshall is the regional center and county seat for Lyons County in Southwestern Minnesota. Marshall became an incorporated village in 1876, and a city on February 20, 1901. In April, 1874, the local paper estimated the population of Marshall at 300, by 1930 the population had grown to 3200. Holy Redeemer Catholic Church was built in 1884. ; 8vo .
