She devoted over 50 years of study and preservation of Native American music amassing a collection of thousands of song recordings, including 2400 transcribed songs In collaboration with the Bureau of American Ethnology of the Smithsonian. Densmore "aspired to prevent the misrepresentation of Indian music in the media and the underrepresentation of true Indian music in scientific inquiry, and she suggested that the two were linked."
