The World of Mathematics. 4 volume set w/slipcase

By Newman, James R.

Simon & Schuster. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1956. Second. Softcover. Original paperbound, blue stiff wraps. Extreme corner tip of volume 4 creased. Overall age toned but appears to be unread. Slipcase is worn and toned but solid. Original pastedown is scuffed, age toned with fore-edge chips. Newman was a mathematician and math historian. In 1940 Newman wrote (with Edward Kasner) Mathematics and the Imagination in which he identified the mathematical concept of a very large but finite number, which he called "googol" and another large number called "googolplex"—this was the first time this number, and this term, was ever identified. The collection represented here is the result of a 15 year effort by Newman to collect what he felt were the most important essays in the field; "A Small Library of the Literature of Mathematics from A 'h-mose` the Scribe to Albert Einstein, Presented with Commentaries and Notes by James R. Newman." ; 8vo.; Book Fair .
