Green cloth with signed cover design, "R" in cream with black line. Square clean copy with worn extremities. Former owner's inscription on ffep with 1 inch tear at the head. Irene Grosvenor Wheelock (1867-1927,) is best known for two publications. In 1903, she wrote “Nestlings of Forest and Marsh,” in The Auk: A Quarterly Journal of Ornithology, Volume 20 (New York: L/S/ Foster, 1903); and in 1904, the highly acclaimed Birds of California (Chicago: A.C. McClurg, 1904). Auk review excerpt of Nestlings: "Gleaned during several years of study of the nesting habits of our familiar birds, and some not quite so well known." The observations here recorded appear to have been made chiefly in the lake shore region near Chicago, and include studies of the nesting habits of the Meadowlark, Bluebird, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Black-bird, Robin, Crow, Phoebe, Wood Pewee, Baltimore Oriole, Chickadee, Marsh Wrens, Sora Rail, Spotted Sandpiper, Killdeer Plover, Bob-white, -Woodpeckers, Swallows, Blue Jay, etc. ; 8vo .
