Continent of Hunter-Gatherers: New Perspectives in Australian Prehistory

By Harry Lourandos

Melbourne: Cambridge University Press, 1997. Book. Near Fine. Plastic Covered. xvii, 390 p. : ill., maps ; 26 cm. 0521359465 (paperback)I In his presentation of a range of prehistoric data, the author reviews archaeological and ethnohistorical evidence together with environmental, demographic and socially-oriented perspectives. Lourandos synthesises previous findings before presenting an original hypothesis. Key debates addressed in the book include the nature of initial colonisation, the role of Tasmania, the role of fire, the cause of faunal extinctions, the intensification debate, horticultural origins in New Guinea and plant exploitation in Australia. This book challenges traditional perceptions of Australian aboriginal prehistory. The natural environment has been seen as the major determinant of hunter-gatherers and Australiana borigines have been understood to have been egalitarian and culturally homogenous. Such an interpretation suggests that their prehistory shows few significant economic and demographic changes. Harry Lourandos argues however that hunter-gatherer societies and their socio-economic processes were more complex than previously thought. Includes index. Bibliography. Has a clear [\plastic cover that enhances the book .

Syd: Ebury Press, 2008. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 287 p. : ill., some col. ; 26 x 26 cm. Includes index. Picture and photograph credits: p. 286-287. We all know that crime has been in Australia since the birth of white settlement - after all, aren't many proud Australians descended from convicts? Crime is a fact of life, yet we are frequently appalled and fascinated by criminal acts. Is that because we fear the unknown monsters among us? Or because we fear the dark soul residing within us? A History of Australian True Crime provides notable examples of grisly and gruesome dirty deeds from Federation to the present day. Tram robbers, baby-thieves, notorious gangsters, psycho killers, petty crims, corporate villains and corrupt cops fill this volume in a compelling cavalcade of Australians behaving badly..
