Description:
New York: Benziger Brothers, 1919. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. The interior of the book is tight and clean. A former owner has put his name and that of the man who gave it to him twice on the free front end paper -- once in ink, and once in blue pencil, and there is also a discoloured spot between the two that looks as though it might be the remains of a decorative stamp. There are no marks in the interior, though, and the binding is tight. The blue cloth covers show a bit of light wear to edges and tips, and a bit of discolouration on the spine, but no other problems. The dust jacket, however, is only in Good condition. It is a plain brown paper with black lettering, and the paper shows a pattern of water spots, light edgewear, and a 1.5 inch section missing from the bottom of the spine -- overall, a bit shabby but quite respectable. Synopsis: This is a story for children, described on the back panel of the dust jacket as: "A pathetic story of a little Italian boy who is brought back to the…

London: Dean & Son, 1879. Hardcover. Terrible/No Jacket. This is a battered, but quite scarce, copy of an early publication by Dean & Son. There is no date of publication in the book itself, but the British Library entry gives the date as 1879. The description lists some of the many, many condition faults inthe book. The pages are intact, but show reading wear and handling. The colour frontispiece is still present, but there is a water line along half of the bottom of the page. The end pages and binding are in poor condition, with a tape repair to the split along the front gutter, etc. etc. The covers show significant wear at all edges and corners, visible handling, and some lifting and damage to the onlay on the front cover.

Description:
London & New York: George Routledge & Sons. New Edition . Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. This book is in poor -- but complete -- condition, needing restoration. The text block is detached from the covers, and the stitching is loose. The coloured frontispiece has come loose, and the binding shows wear and rubs at edges, with cloth missing from the top and bottom of the spine. There is a gift inscription on the front free end paper "May 17, 1977 -- Grandmother's book when she was a little girl". The original edition was published in 1853, but this is a later printing. A moralistic novel intended for young girls, it tells the story of Helen, an early or pre-teen girl, the problems her character faults (which seem minor to us) lead her into, and how she sees the error of her ways. To modern readers perhaps the most striking lesson of the book is how an adult -- like Aunt Eleanor, Helen's guardian -- can use guilt, skillfully applied and managed, to induce conformity and willing obedience.

The pictorial covers show light wear to edges and corners, with somewhat heavier wear to the spine The dust jacket is clipped, and is only in Good condition, with several large nicks of missing paper. Because the dust jacket and cover use the same art work, this is not as obtrusive as it might be. The jacket is now in a protective plastic cover, and despite the flaws has a period charm.
