Ottawa: Canada. Forestry Branch, Department of Resources and Development, 1950. Soft cover. Good. This is a small-format (8 x 6 inches, 27 pages) staple-bound children's picture book It was produced as part of the Canaidan Forestry Branch's forest fire prevention public outreach program.. The author describes it as "designed for use in primary grades" and said that it was to be distributed through provincial Departments of Education, to "help to fill the gap in literature available for primary schools." (Forestry Chronicle,1949, p. 283). This copy is intact, but shows considerable wear. There is a 1 inch split to the top of the spine fold but no other tears or rips. Both the cover and internal pages sow wear and handling, the staples have rusted, and the back cover is stained. The attached scans should give a better idea of condtion.

Toronto: Copp, Clark & Co., 1871. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. The interior of the book is clean and tight. The paper has tanned slightly, there is a small bookseller's stamp (Henderson & Co., Ottawa) on the fixed front end paper, and a small water stain in the margin of the last 65 pages. The paper has tanned slightly. The brown embossed covers show surprisingly little wear for a school book. They have a bit of wear to tips, bumps to the top and bottom of the spine, a short (1/2") split at the top of the spine, and small light spots (2 front cover, 1 rear). The title page states that this is "Authorized by the Council of Public Instruction of Ontario", a phriase which may need a short explanation. In the earliest days of public education in Ontario, the supply of text books was inadequate. Paris: Fernand Nathan. Soft cover. Very Good. The interior is clean and tight. There is a former owner's signature on the title page, and the paper has tanned very slightly. The paper covers have light wear at tips and corners but are also in very good condition. This is a nice tidy copy.

Winnipeg, MN: Peguis Publishers, 1972. Second Printing, 1976 . Soft cover. Very Good +. The interior of the book is crisp and clean, showing no marks or signs of wear. The paper covers are also in excellent condition, showing little wear at all. A lovely copy. Synopsis: This is a picture book using simple vocabulary, intended for students in small northern communities. "Its purpose is to encorage active oral English expression and participation, as well as enjoyment". The two other titles in the series (Jack and Jet, and A Little Mouse) are also available.

Leeds: E.J. Arnold & Son, 1964. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The pages are crisp and clean, showing light wear only. The fixed front end paper has a number sequence in large red letters, but there are no other marks. The cover is clean and fresh, with light wear to the edges and corners. The dust jacket is not clipped and is also in very good condition, with light edgewear, and two short (under 1") closed tears on the back panel. The jacket is now in a removeable mylar cover.

London: T. C. & E. C. Jack ; Thomas Nelson & Sons. Soft cover. Poor. This is a school reader; fairy tales arranged as reading lessons. It is in very poor condition -- battered, tattered, marked, pages detaching from their cover, etc. etc. However, it has 8 colour plates by Katherine Cameron, and seems to be a rare item -- at the time of posting, there were no other copies on ABE. A warning, though. A previous owner has inked outlines in most of the plates. Scans are available on request, and this should definitely be seen before purchase.

New York: Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1938. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Published in the "Our Changing World" series of school texts. The interior is clean and tight, showing next to no use or wear. The name of the school on the front free end paper (U.S.S. #1, Menapia & Tolmie) and a pocket pasted in the back of the book. The green cloth covers are in good condition, but show moderate wear, including some fading and a number in black on the spine, but overall the impression is tidy and respectable.

Montreal: W.J. Gage. 2nd Printing, 1951 . Hardcover. Good. This is the French and Catholic version of "Our New Friends," by William S. Gray, the Dick and Jane reader. It was published in the "Cathedral" series of readers authorized for use in the separate (parochial) school system of Canada. Dick and Jane have become Paul and Jeanne, Sally is Lise and several short chapters dealing with religious themes have been inserted. The interior of the book is tight and clean, with pages showing light handling, but no tears, marks or damage. The blue pictorial covers also show moderate wear, and bumps and rubbing to the top and bottom of the spine and corners.

Baldwin, NY: Barnell Loft, Ltd., 1987. Third Printing . Soft cover. Very Good. This is published as part of the "Top Shelf Literature" collection, in the "Lilac Library'. It is a short (15 p.) reader designed to be handed out to each pupil. The interior of the book is crisp and clean, showing no marks, signatures or signs of wear or use. The pictorial paper covers are also in excellent condition, with just a suggestion of wear to the edges. This is a story about Grizzly Bear, a pet Saint Bernard, who defends her owner and baby from a grizzly. The last 2 pages contain vocabulary notes, reading comprehension questions.

Montréal & Toronto: W. J. Gage Limitée, 1962. First Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Overall, this is quite an attractive copy, but one with a major condition problem. The interior of the book is clean and tight, showing light use only. There is a former owner's name in marker on the top corner of the front fixed end paper. The worst problem, however, is on the title page, where someone has cut out the illustration, amounting to half of the title page. This damage does not affect the usability of the book, but definitely makes it a less attractive copy. The illustrated blue covers are bright, with light wear at edges and corners -- please note that the shadow visible in the attached scan is just that -- a shadow -- and not a darkening of the colour of the actual book.

Ashtabula, OH: Amerikan Tanomat. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. This is a shabby, but intact, copy with several indications of ex-library status. The attached scan gives a better idea of condition.

The front free end paper has been removed, but the rest of the interior is complete, showing writing on p.5 and visible handling and use. The covers are also worn at edges and corners. Synopsis: This primer provides lessons in reading and writing based on lessons about animals and plants. It is arranged by seasons -- starting with "Autumn Lessons" and ending in summer. Interestingly, it includes a number of pages with coloured photographic illustrations. An interesting little item.

London: Methuen, 1970. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. The interior of the book is clean and complete. There is a small sticker pull on the front end paper, but no other damage. The illustrated covers are bright, with light wear at edges and corners.

The laminated covers are fresh and bright, again with just a bit of light wear only. A very nice copy. Synopsis: This is a picture book intended for mothers to use to teach their children to read. It contains a short story well-illustrated with simple pictures, and beside each page is a "help you to read" page, intended to be used by mother (or any other friendly adult) and contains ideas to help the adult teach the child.
