At twelve noon on Thursday the 2nd of April 1868 twenty-five-old Frances Kidder was hanged outside Maidstone Gaol before a crowd of over 2,000 people. Frances Kidder made history as the last woman hanged in public. Her execution was carried out by the bungling hangman William Calcraft, and therefore she did not die swiftly. On the 12th March, Frances had been convicted and sentenced to death at Maidtone Assizes for drowning her 11year-old step-daughter at New Romney. With Index.
