This collection of essays argues that a unique development in autobiographical writing occurred in Victorian England and attempts to provide a wide ranging perception of the role not only of autobiography, but of the 'autobiographical impulse' in this period. Like contemporary poetry, the novel, painting, and other non-fiction, Victorian autobiography sought new forms to accommodate private experience and make it relevant to the needs of others.
