Album of Original Photographs of Iran

By [Various Photographers]

N.p: N.p., 1944-1966. Prints are intended as press photos, thus most are pasted to paper with filing notes and captions handwritten or typewritten and pasted to recto and verso. In some cases, "Iran" or cropping dimensions are indicated in marker on the print face. All prints and newspaper clippings are uniformly near fine, showing signs of their age but still sharp and clean, protected in acetate album sleeves. Housed in a paper folder and clamping black vinyl album case in very good condition.. A collection of 52 original silver gelatin prints, mostly 8"X10", documenting health, agriculture, infrastructure, and industry in Iran during the era of Mohammad Reza Shah. Two prints are are credited to Marc Riboud, among other photographers, including Tony Chapelle, Alice Schalek, Joe Covello, Mary Hill, and Max Winter. Also included in the album are four anti-Shah satirical cartoons clipped from American newspapers circa the 1950s, and two small maps of Iran from 1962. The spirit of the photographs is one of modernization and globalization among artifacts of an ancient civilization. However, the accompanying satirical cartoons, which mock the Shah for his dependence on foreign aid, suggest something of the political crisis brewing in the midst of such reinvention, hinting at the radical departure the country would take by the end of the '70s.
