Paginates: blanks, frontis, 548, [6], blanks, 28 unpaginated plates including frontis and half title. Measures 8.5 x 6.25 inches. Author traveled through Territory 1858-1860. Scarce first edition. Circa 1985. Virtually all copies on the market are the 1999 reprint - this is the rare first edition. Softcover, 32 pages. This is from the 1980s but exact date is unclear. Fine, large, first edition, hardcover, Hali publication with dust jacket now in archival cover. If you get out the glasses you might find some trivial shelf wear. Dust jacket and book are both fine. Rare first Japanese edition. Tokyo, 1969. 156 pages. 11 x 8.5 inches. Printed in Finland. Front cover is gone. All other pages are present. Spine is decaying. Some pencil notes on back blank pages. One copy found in WorldCat (OCLC: 43726244) but I am not sure it is the same. Hard to know what to say about all this. An exceedingly rare item with serious condition issues. I have provided scans. 1892 London first edition. Hardcover. Condition is Very Good. Boards show some wear, mostly at spine tips. Interior has pencil signature of prior owner, no other markings. Tissue paper present on all plates, tissue opposite p.20 is torn but complete, some others folded. Plates show some foxing along edges not really affecting the images. Overall condition is Very Good: primary condition issue is sun fade to front board and spine. Gutters showing front and back but all is holding together and only slightly tender. Interior is excellent. Gift inscription on half title dated 'Jan./99' along with prior bookseller's pencil note. Complete as issued with all blanks, 8 illustrations and folding map. This copy is distinguished by the scarce red brick binding. Almost all other first editions have the blue binding. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: True 1st UK editions are dated on title page 1898 by Smith, Elder & Co., London. Those without dates on title page are later issues. The 1st US edition is Appleton dated 1899 on title page. Fine Books & Collections Magazine Compendium Winter 2010. Number 47. Condition is Near Fine: light edge and corner wear. No other problems. Please see image of the item you will receive. Notes: Fine Books did not publish anything in 2009 (it was a tough year) then came back with this in early 2010. Their website now calls this the 2009 Compendium. Under the various numbering systems this should be #37 (not 47) or 8.0 neither of which actually exist. For the terminally curious and/or confused I have prepared a short summary of the publishing history of this magazine that explains everything and is available upon request.
