Locke's Essay was first translated into French by Pierre Coste and published in1700. Although John Nourse established himself as a publisher of literature and scientific works in French, this edition is often said to be printed in Paris and was probably printed by Trevoux. Hitch..., 1737. 12mo, pp. 379 [380 - 384 Contents], recently rebound in quarter calf, raised bands between gilt rules on spine, red morocco label, marbled board; ex-library, with library stamp on recto and verso of title-page, occasional soiling of text. Wynne wrote to Locke on 31 January 1695 suggesting that it "would be very useful to publish an abridgment of the Book [i. e., Locke's Essay]," adding that if Locke approved, "I would willingly contribute any assistance that I may be capeable [sic] of, to ease you of the Trouble." Locke replied on 8 February, giving his blessing: "I should be very glad any thing in my book could be made usefull...." Wynne's work was first published in 1696. Yolton 121. Alston 7: 127. FIRST IRISH EDITION. 2 volumes in 1. 8vo, 195 x 118 mms., pp. [x], 220; [ii], 245 [246 blank], engraved vignette on each title-page, contemporary calf; lackk label, front joint slightly cracked, but a good to very good copy. The present book, Alciphron, was the longest work written by the great Irish philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753), preeminent proponent of the philosophy of immaterialism, who was also Bishop of Cloyne, and Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. The Italian author and editor Benedetto Varchi (1503 - 1565 ) was an exceptional translator and editor of Latin texts; the earliest printing of this translation that I have found occurred in 1562. WorldCat notes that "Boethius was an eminent public figure under the Gothic emperor Theodoric, and an exceptional Greek scholar. When he became involved in a conspiracy and was imprisoned in Pavia, it was to the Greek philosophers that he turned. The Consolation was written in the period leading up to his brutal execution. Malebranche (1638-1715) published this work in 1674 - 1675, and the last edition published in his lifetime, the sixth, provided the textual source for this edition. It was translated into English in 1694 by Thomas Taylor. Malebranche's work was read with interest and enthusiasm by 18th British century philosophers. Large, thick 8vo, pp. x, 758, 32 page catalogue at end, some leaves unopened, original cloth; top of spine snagged, rear joint splitting, front joint slightly split, top edge soiled. Hamilton reprints here articles that appeared, anonymously, in The Edinburgh Review between 1829 and 1839, but the work contains some of his most interesting and entertaining observations.

In some ways, Macvicar's book is a useful guide to Political Correctness in the mid-nineteenth century, and the appendix on "The Philosophy and Science of Common Sense" is entertaining.

Schneider, 1761. 8vo, pp. [iv], 340, title-page printed in red and black, contemporary mottled continental calf, gilt spine; binding affected by mottling process, with some leather missing, spine rubbed and worn, lacks label. This translation by Jean-Bernard Merian formed volume 2 of the collected edition of the translations into French of Hume's works that Schneider published in five volumes, 1758 - 1760, and re-issued (with some changes) in five volumes as a second edition 1759 - 1764. "Tome II" appears in the lower left-hand margin at the beginning of each gathering. There is no general title-page (and the ornament on the title-page is different from that on the general title-pages of the collected editions), and this is possibly a separate issue of the work. The contents leaf, however, is a "Table des Essais contenus dans le second Volume." COPAC locates a copy at CUL; no other copies located.

One of the ministers of the Parish of Old Machar in Aberdeen, he published several other books on philosophy and psychology in the later 19th century, and died in 1903. Jamieson's book is divided into several sections: the philosophy of the conditioned; the philosophy of physics; the philosophy of metaphysics; the philosophy of the abstract sciences; the philosophy of theology. The Preface opens with a declaration that "The great want of our time is an exposition of the true philosophy of Existence--an interpretation of Ontology, on principles of universal application, throughout all the departments of Natural Law."
