Description:
Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1947. First edition, 4to, pp.xl, 73, 169 plates. An internally very good copy in original cloth. Upper board creased and slightly finger stained, corners bumped. The scarce first volume recording the results of Janse's three archaeological excavations in Indo-China from 1934 to 1939. Robert Ture Olov Janse (1892-1985), a Swedish archaeologist, is widely lauded as the man who brought organisation and respectability to Southeast Asian archaeology. His excavations were largely focused on brick tombs of the Han period in Tonkin and North and Central Annam, particularly Dong-so'n. Of the dozens of tombs uncovered one was one of the largest subterranean brick buildings in Indo-China (tomb no.2 of Nghi-ve) and several were completely undisturbed, leading to rich funerary deposits. Some later tombs and locations were contemporary with the Sung and T'ang dynasty. The second and third volumes published several years later are not present.

A very good set in original boards, neatly rebacked in calf to original style. Volume I with minor library marks. The first, led by Grunwedel, worked at several sites in the Turfan Oasis in 1902-03, notably Karakhoja (or Khocho), Sengim and Murtuk. Forty-four crates of the finds, clay and wood figures, woodcuts, manuscripts and wall-paintings, were despatched to Berlin. The second expedition, 1904-05, was led by von Le Coq. He spent three months methodically investigating Karakhoja before moving his attention to the temple complexes of Sengim, Bezeklik and Toyok. In August he moved to Komul (Hami). Grunwedel returned for the third expedition,… Read More

London: published and printed by the author at 12 Warwick Square and sold by James Gilbert, bookseller., 1851. First edition. 8vo (24.5 x 16 cm), pp.63, [1, blank], [2, imprint], with 42 wood engravings in text, title with printed frame in red. Folio broadsheet (40 x 44 cm), folded and tipped-in at rear. A very good copy in original cloth by Josiah Westley. Slight wear to head and tail of spine. Broadsheet lightly age-toned, and torn on folds. A selection of excerpts from the 11th-century Bogu tulu, a Chinese catalogue of imperial bronzes in sixteen volumes, translated by the printer Peter Perring Thoms (1790-1855). Thoms believed that the majority of the vases were made of gold, and the mirrors of polished steel; his dissertation makes no mention of bronze at all. The wood engraved illustrations were done from blocks carved by A-Lae, a Chinese artist from Canton, and were shown at the 1851 Exhibition. This copy has a remarkable broadsheet, The Original Address presented to His Excellency Hwang, on… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1952-59. First edition. Two volumes, folio (46 x 36 cm), pp.xxvi, 290, 125 plates, 173 illustrations and plans, large folding map in 2 sheets; pp.xxiv, 300, 127 plates, 151 illustrations and plans. Volume I is 175 of 550 copies, Volume II is 107 of 550 copies. A fine set in original cloth, with rather torn and frayed dust-jackets. These volumes "remain essential instruments of knowledge in the field of early Islamic art and architecture... and the best that the field can offer to others" in Oleg Grabar's assessment in Muqarnas (Vol. 8, 1991, p.1), words which remain as true today as then. Grabar noted too that this edition, with the volumes "in their imperially gigantic original form" was physically unequalled by subsequent abridgements and revisions. Creswell's magnum opus has attracted criticism for its pose of scientific neutrality but its depth of detail and documentation remains unmatched. The first volume covers: The Rise of the… Read More

The headpiece signed "A. Brückner pinx: 1816". Bound in late nineteenth-century half morocco with boards of gilt paper blind-stamped in elaborate Japonist patterns, corners and spine blind-ruled, spine with raised bands and morocco label; very slight wear to edges, and one short split to top of upper board's hinge, but both joints firm; a few areas of marginal discolouration to the vellum, but illumination clean and vibrant. A very good copy. A remarkable work of book art, combining printing on vellum in Arabic and roman scripts with a fascinating scheme of illumination.
