The printed text of four lectures delivered by Samuel Beal to draw attention to the India Office's landmark acquisition of a printed set of the Tripitaka through the good offices of the Japanese ambassador to Britain, Iwakure Tomomi. The lectures deal with the introduction of Buddhism to China, the translation of Buddhist texts in Indian languages into Chinese, and the many different cultures and traditions from which Chinese Buddhism drew. A very good copy in old polished calf boards, recently rebacked, end-papers and page edges comb marbled. Boards a little rubbed and scuffed, text block tight and clean. Domingo Fernández Navarrete (1610-1689), a Dominican friar, served as a missionary in China for many years and was much opposed to the Jesuits' accommodation to traditional Chinese customs in the notorious Rites Controversy. His book, a valued and sympathetic account of China, first appeared in Spanish in 1676 and became popular through much of Europe, especially among those hostile to the Jesuits for its explicitly anti-Jesuit arguments (see Löwendahl 165). Helsingfors : K.F. Puromies Buchdruckerei, 1931. First edition, folio, pp.ix, 45, 352 illustrations, map. German text. Finnische Altertumsgesellschaft. A good/very good copy in the original cloth, neatly re-backed, corners worn, a few pages creased at edges. Johan Reinhold Aspelin travelled in Mongolia and Siberia between 1887 and 1889 researching the origins of the Finnish peoples. He did not publish any scientific results of his journeys but described his travels in letters published in the newspaper Uusi Suometar. These letters are reproduced here, edited and annotated by Aspelin's travelling companion. They concentrate on archaeological discoveries, details of the route, and peoples encountered. The pencil drawings produced on all three expeditions are here reproduced for the first time, some restored and corrected by the editor.

Each Volume contains six monthly issues with exception of Volumes I and XIII where there are only five. This journal reproduces historical documents and letters relating to the history of Macau and Portuguese imperialism. Volume I, No.4, to Volume II, No. 6, include a selection of Portuguese documents, 1631 to 1652, in the possession of the British Library. J.M. Braga's important essay, "Algumas Achegas para a Iconografia de Macau," extends through Volumes II and III. Volume XV, Nos.1-4 are from the Fourth Series.

An important tract on Christianity in China compiled by the Lutheran theologian Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1693-1755) with a fifty-page introduction by Richard Gibbing and his extensive notes. This text was first published in German as Erzählung der neuesten Chinesischen Kirchengeschichte (1748), both separately and as an addition to the first German edition of Du Halde. An English translation was published in 1750 but, according to this editor's introduction, was 'so scarce that its existence is almost unknown'. Andrade provides historical notes on the Portuguese presence in China and the imperial Chinese dynasties, as well as letters dealing with literature, law, and commerce.
