Paris: chez l'Auteur, [Circa 1786, 1788]. Two works bound in one volume, 4to (28 x 20.5 cm), pp. [iv, engraved title & dedication], [48, engraved captions], 24 plates; [ii, engraved title & dedication], [44 of 48 engraved captions], 24 plates. A very good set bound in 19th-century quarter morocco over red glazed boards. First work clean and fresh; first half of second work foxed. Second work bound without final four pages of captions. Two illustrated examples of the 18th-century French mania for China and chinoiserie bound together. The first work depicts the life of Confucius in a suite of engravings copied from a set of Chinese drawings sent back to Paris from Peking by the eminent French Jesuit missionary Jean Joseph Marie Amiot (1718-1793). The second work depicts the deeds of the Chinese emperors. According to the title, these engravings were copied from Chinese drawings in the collection of Henri Bertin, now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France; but these drawings and… Read More

A very good copy in original pictorial cloth, gilt. A little rubbed. Scattered foxing. The printed text of four lectures delivered by Samuel Beal to draw attention to the India Office's landmark acquisition of a printed set of the Tripitaka through the good offices of the Japanese ambassador to Britain, Iwakure Tomomi. The lectures deal with the introduction of Buddhism to China, the translation of Buddhist texts in Indian languages into Chinese, and the many different cultures and traditions from which Chinese Buddhism drew. Samuel Beal (1825-1889), who had served as a naval chaplain in Chinese waters, subsequently achieved a reputation as one of Britain's foremost scholars of Chinese Buddhism and was professor of Chinese at University College, London. Description:
London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill, [1732]. Second edition in English, extracted from Churchill's Voyages, folio, pp. [iv, title and preface], 380. Lacking the two plates. A very good copy in old polished calf boards, recently rebacked, end-papers and page edges comb marbled. Boards a little rubbed and scuffed, text block tight and clean. Domingo Fernández Navarrete (1610-1689), a Dominican friar, served as a missionary in China for many years and was much opposed to the Jesuits' accommodation to traditional Chinese customs in the notorious Rites Controversy. His book, a valued and sympathetic account of China, first appeared in Spanish in 1676 and became popular through much of Europe, especially among those hostile to the Jesuits for its explicitly anti-Jesuit arguments (see Löwendahl 165). The present abridged translation was the first published English translation, appearing in Awnsham and John Churchill's multi-volume 'Collection of voyages' (1704).… Read More

Description:
Helsingfors : K.F. Puromies Buchdruckerei, 1931. First edition, folio, pp.ix, 45, 352 illustrations, map. German text. Finnische Altertumsgesellschaft. A good/very good copy in the original cloth, neatly re-backed, corners worn, a few pages creased at edges. Johan Reinhold Aspelin travelled in Mongolia and Siberia between 1887 and 1889 researching the origins of the Finnish peoples. He did not publish any scientific results of his journeys but described his travels in letters published in the newspaper Uusi Suometar. These letters are reproduced here, edited and annotated by Aspelin's travelling companion. They concentrate on archaeological discoveries, details of the route, and peoples encountered. The pencil drawings produced on all three expeditions are here reproduced for the first time, some restored and corrected by the editor.

Dublin: printed at the University Press, 1862. Second English edition, the first with Gibbing's introduction and notes, 8vo (23 x 14.5 cm), pp.[iv], 111, [1, advertisements]. A very good copy in contemporary embossed cloth, gilt title on spine. Largely unopened. Light rubbing to boards, corners slightly bumped. Scattered foxing. An important tract on Christianity in China compiled by the Lutheran theologian Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1693-1755) with a fifty-page introduction by Richard Gibbing and his extensive notes. This text was first published in German as Erzählung der neuesten Chinesischen Kirchengeschichte (1748), both separately and as an addition to the first German edition of Du Halde. An English translation was published in 1750 but, according to this editor's introduction, was 'so scarce that its existence is almost unknown'. Von Mosheim provides a historical sketch of Christianity in China and a detailed Protestant analysis of the Catholic missions and the Chinese… Read More

Two volumes bound in one, 8vo (24.5 x 16.5 cm), pp.[xviii], 245, [1, blank], [4, index]; [x], 235, [1, blank], [5], [1, blank], [2, index], 12 lithographed portraits. A very good copy bound in later tree calf. Some foxing to portraits. A collection of informative letters written by the Portuguese merchant and functionary José Ignacio de Andrade (1779-1862) during twenty years spent in the Far East. Seventy-six of the hundred letters published here concern China and Macao. Andrade provides historical notes on the Portuguese presence in China and the imperial Chinese dynasties, as well as letters dealing with literature, law, and commerce. One letter contains a detailed description of the variety of teas consumed in China; another, dealing with the history of Portuguese Macao, strongly supports the case for the colony's sovereignty against direct Portuguese rule. The portraits depict Andrade and his wife, to whom he addressed… Read More
