Mycenae : a Guide to Its Ruins and Its History

By Mylonas, George E.

Athens: Ekdotike Hellados , 1977. For 30 years Professor George E. Mylonas directed excavations at Mycenae for Washington University in St. Louis and the Archaeological Society of Athens. (1951-1981) Thirty years of excavation have brought about the need for a Guide book such as this, which contains the latest results of the archaeologists' work at Mycenae. The illustrations and the many plans it contains will, I hope, make easy the study of the ruins which at first glance seem labyrinthine. In Part I of the Guide I give a full description of the remains on the acropolis of Mycenae; in Part II, an account of the tombs and houses to be found outside the acropolis. In Part III, I offer a concise account of the history and legends of Mycenae, of the excavations and of the excavators whose work has made possible the study of the Mycenaean civilization. In this way a rounded picture of the site and its historic role in the affairs of Greece may be obtained from reading the Guide and inspection of the site.It is hoped that the visit to the City of Agamemnon will prove a memorable experience for the reader. 80p. illus (+ Fold-out plans). 5th.edition. The Mycenaean World

By Chadwick, John

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1991. In 1952 the decipherment of the Linear B script suddenly revealed the Greekness of Mycenaean Greece. Now, after new discoveries and more than 20 years of intensive work, scholars are able to interpret the written documents and reconstruct from them a vivid picture of life in this remote period, in a way which is impossible from archaeology alone. John Chadwick, who assisted Ventris in the original decipherment, has played a major part in these advances. He now summarizes the results of research and in so doing opens the door to a new world, Mycenaean Greece seen through the eyes of its inhabitants. The tablets may be only, as he describes them, "the account books of anonymous clerks", but from these prosaic documents he shows how we can infer a bronze industry, foreign slave-women, or even human sacrifice. Not least important is the comparison of the newly available data with the Homeric account, much to the detriment of Homer"s credibility as a witness. 201p. illus. maps. bubliograohy. index. Reprint. Soft Cover. As New.
