Description:
New York: Vintage, 2002 Book. Fine. Soft cover. First Edition. Parallel texts in Greek & English "A bilingual edition of the work of the Greek poet Sappho, in a new translation by Anne Carson. Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos from about 630 B.C. She was a musical genius who devoted her life to composing and performing songs. Of the nine books of lyrics Sappho is said to have composed, none of the music is extant and only one poem has survived complete. All the rest are fragments. In this book, Carson presents all of Sappho"s fragments in Greek and in English. Brackets and spaces give the reader a sense of what is absent as well as what is present on the papyrus. Carson"s translation illuminates Sappho"s reflections on love, desire, marriage, exile, bees, old age, shame, time, and many other aspects of the human situation".

Description:
University of California Press, 1995 Book. As New. Soft cover. Peter Green recreates the life and times of the Greek lyric poet Sappho in this beautifully conceived, sharply detailed work of historical imagination. We meet Sappho at the age of fifty, when she is shaken by her fatal and final love affair with Phaon. She narrates her own story from the vantage point of self-questioning middle age, and her candid meditations make intimate, engrossing reading. Only fragments of Sappho's poetry survive. In imagining Sappho's life Green found his task " rather like that of an archaeologist reassembling some amphora from hundreds of shards of which more than half are missing. " 273p. maps, chronology..

Description:
London: John Murray, 1965 Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st.UK Ed.. "Sappho, the poetess of Lesbos, famous for her verses and for her lovers, looks back over her past, her life in Ereses on Lebos, in Mytilene and in Syracuse, the endless political intrigues, her dedication to Aphrodite. She tells her own story, vital, passionate, unaware of guilt. Through her Mr. Green creates the complex turbulent world of the seventh century B.C. and shows us with memorable skill not Sappho as the stiff figure of questionable legend but as a living woman. ".

Description:
Cambridge MA: Harvard University Press, 1998 Book. As New. Soft cover. She lived on the island of Lesbos around 600 B.C.E. She composed lyric poetry, only fragments of which survive. And she was--and is--the most highly regarded woman poet of Greek and Roman antiquity. Little more than this can be said with certainty about Sappho, and yet a great deal more is said. Her life, so little known, is the stuff of legends; her poetry, the source of endless speculation. This book is a search for Sappho through the poetry she wrote, the culture she inhabited, and the myths that have risen around her. It is an expert and thoroughly engaging introduction to one of the most enduring and enigmatic figures of antiquity. Margaret Williamson conducts us through ancient representations of Sappho, from vase paintings to appearances in Ovid, and traces the route by which her work has reached us, shaped along the way by excavators, editors, and interpreters. She goes back to the poet's world and time to explore…
