Ivory cloth hardcover features die-cut cardboard Mickey Mouse and a can of paint on front, spine titled in gilt. Cover is clean and cutouts are in fine condition. Slight toning to cloth along edges and a light vertical wave to cloth at center of spine. Book is otherwise fine. Binding and hinges firm, intact and straight. The clear acetate jacket is printed with title information on front, flap copy on front and rear flap. The jacket is clean and complete, lightly shelf rubbed. There is a 2" closed tear at bottom of front jacket panel (small pieces of clear archival tale applied to inverse side of jacket at start and end of tear to prevent it continuing), short tear and chip at top of rear flap fold and some cloudy discoloration and waviness to bottom rear corner near flap. Overall the jacket, notoriously fragile, is very well preserved. A monumental work, profusely illustrated with 763 illustrations of which 351 are in color. There are several foldouts. 10-1/2 x 13-1/2". 458 pages. including detailed index. Printed endpapers with wonderful lobster art - the endpapers are clean and complete, left bottom corner of front endpaper creased. Pages also clean, top edge gilt but moderately dulled. There are closed tears to two text leaves (page11/12 almost torn totally from bottom to near top) and one tissue protector. Tears not taped and could be neatly repaired. Illustrated title page is toned and the last two color plates and their tissue protectors are toned along the top. . Binding is intact but tender; there is a split starting before page 63 and a neat glue repair to front hinge. Pages overall very good, with occasional light foxing, about half dozen leaves with moderate foxing, Bound in brown cloth (originally may have been plum colored) over beveled boards, decorative blind stamping to all panels, gilt figures on front cover, gilt titling on spine. Spine cloth and gilt very faded, cloth at spine ends heavily worn. with large chips from top of spine (not affecting type). Binding is fragile: front hinge cracked and loose; rear hinge broken with rear board nearly detached. A few splits starting between gatherings, though at this time, all pages continue to hold. Still better than average for this scarce original edition, and containing all 'facsimile" drawings, engraved upon wood, by the Brothers Dalziel. 32-page December 1858 Chapman and Hall catalog bound in at rear, as well as 1-page ad for book "by the same author." 5-3/4 x 9"; xx + 506 text pages plus advertising.. There is some rumpling to the pasted ends, probably caused during binding process. Bound in paper covered boards (front cover with title and illustration in color) and blue cloth spine. John must stay at his uncle's farm in Naples, Maine while his parents take a road trip through New England in search of a mysterious "treasure."
