Our Chauncey: After Dinner Rhymes

By Bromley, Isaac H

New York: New York Printing Co. (The Republic Press), 1891. 1891 Fis Edition. VERY GOOD. An unusually well-preserved original edition. Published to commemorate an after-dinner presentation of witty verse by lawyer and humorist Isaac H. Bromley. The event was the January 23, 1891 Annual Dinner of the New York Yale Alumni Association, honoring guest Chauncey M. Depew (Depew was then President o the New York Central Railroad. In 1899 he was elected New York State Senator). The book was published "Revised and Freshened with Notes by the Author." Two popular artists were chosen to illustrate: Charles Dana Gibson and Dan Beard. There are 10 full page black & white illustrations, of which 8 are signed by Gibson, the other 2 unsigned but likely Gibson. Most text pages are adorned with a highly embellished/illustrated design to the initial cap, with a companion drawing. 16 of these pieces are signed by Beard, it is likely the rest of these pages are also his illustrations. Beard also illustrated the title page, and the small "The End" on final page. 2 pages have small illustrations without the initial cap design, these are signed by Gibson. A few pages have only a typographically adorned initial cap. A clean, intact copy. The only markings are an erased penciled marking on the front free endpaper and a small catalog number hand written on the rear pasted endpaper along with a rubber stamped "removed from the Collection of the Museum of the City of New York" on the same endpaper. Pages are clean and near fine. Endpapers were printed in a light green floral design; they are now heavily toned, the design visible only on the pasted ends. Cover is a combination of a blue cloth spine with decorative paper covered boards: white paper printed with a light floral pattern. The front cover is gilt titled. The cover is edge worn, with chipping to paper along the edges, the corners quite rubbed and worn. The white paper is moderately dust soiled. Binding intact and hinges, though tender are intact; there is short tear to the top of the endpaper at front hinge. Size: 9-1/2 x 8". 45 folioed pages.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Gibson, Charles Dana; Beard, Dan.
