Vol. 2 has penciled notes on blank page at end of book and a few penciled lines in margins. Books are square and tightly bound. Edited by Frank Forester (Henry William Herbert). Illustrated with 6 full-page engravings and 29 line illustrations in text. A clean, well-bound copy - the only marking a penciled owner name at top of title page. Bound in green cloth over beveled boards with blind embossing and gilt decoration of a hunting dog on front, gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Pages are overall crisp, clean and near fine; scattered light foxing and corner creases to two leaves. Five of the plates have light to moderate toning or damp-staining; the last engraving (The Setters) is the most heavily toned. Cover is clean though the cloth on the front board is wavy; rear board has a damp mark that has faded the cloth along the bottom half of the cover. Cover edges moderately rubbed. Binding and hinges tender but intact, no splits or loose pages. Sections include the Preface, "The Sportsman's Vade Mecum", "Dogs and Their Management", and "Dog Breaking" which includes detailed information and advice on indoor training, tricks and hunting skills (fetching, retrieving, ranging, pointing, "backing" and more). 5-3/4 x 8". vi + 663 text pages plus plates and eight publisher advertising pages at rear.. Pages, top edge gilt, front and bottom edges untrimmed, are complete and near fine - all plates complete with captioned tissue protectors. Four pages (78-79 & 86-87) have areas of dark toning, primarily in the gutter, from old bookmarks, now removed. Plates are not affected. Firmly bound in decorative hardcover of olive green cloth stamped with gilt titles on front and spine as well as decorative stamping in a repeating design of green oak leaves and orange-brown acorns across front cover and spine. Cover is clean and attractive. Stamping on front cover is bright, spine stamping dulled but clearly visible. Cover edges lightly rubbed; spine ends creased with small tears to cloth. Binding and hinges are firm, intact and straight. A nicely designed book with small line-cut decorations to chapter heads and tails, 2-color illustrated title page. Photographic plates are reproduced in duotone, some sepia, ocean views with blue-gray cast. Both essayist Mabie and photographer Eickemeyer were natives of New York State (Cold Spring and Yonkers). Mabie here explores the role of nature, the mysterious force of life, on the supreme art - the art of living. Eickemeyer, a renowned pictorialist photographer, was an early member of "The Brotherhood of the Linked Ring."
