Description:
Rome, Italy: Various Publishers, 1948. Seven posters. All folded as issued, all but one near fine or better with dimensions and imperfections noted below. Translations of most of the text are available. This is a collection of posters which document early United States Cold War policy as well as the first covert operations of the CIA. The 1948 elections in Italy were the first since 1922 and the United States backed the Christian Democratic Party against the Popular Democratic Front (communist) and the Socialist Unity parties. According to Mario Del Pero in "The United States and 'Psychological Warfare' in Italy, 1948-1955" (The Journal of American History, Vol. 87, No. 4 (Mar., 2001), pp. 1304-1334) "The Italian elections of April 1948 are considered a crucial turning point of the early Cold War. The pro-Soviet Left was severely defeated at the polls, while the main Italian anticommunist party-the Christian Democrats gained an absolute majority in the new parliament. But those elections were also… Read More

Description:
Washington, D.C., 1942. Very good. Group of 16 pieces of ephemera measuring between 3¼" x 5½" and 11½" x 9". Most items very good: one with a tiny tear and moderate creasing at edges, not affecting any text; a few with light edge wear and a few small soil spots; some scattered light spotting. This is a fantastic group of speeches, ephemera and campaign materials related to the first woman to be elected to national office in the United States, Jeannette Rankin. Jeannette Rankin was born in 1880 near Missoula, Montana and graduated from the University of Montana in 1902. After a brief period as a social worker in Spokane, she moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington and became involved in the women's suffrage movement. She helped organize the New York Woman Suffrage Party, served as president of the Montana Women's Suffrage Association and as field secretary of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. In 1911, Rankin became the first woman to speak before the Montana… Read More

Washington DC: Newspaper Project of the Committee for the March on Washington, 1993. Very good +. 15" x 11 ½" Newsprint. pp. 20. Very good plus with light toning. This newspaper by the Committee for the March on Washington was issued a little over two months before the 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. A pseudo-activist handbook, its cover contained a checklist for attendees including, "if you haven't already, come out to your parents and tell them to make their plans to be in D.C." The paper contained a list of demands, a calendar of events and tips such as to bring colored chalk to decorate the streets of D.C. It also had articles from organizers as well as an article from Donna Minkowitz who covered LGBTQ issues for the Village Voice in the 1980s and 90s. Also included were appeals for people of color and Asian-Americans to attend, as well as a directory of local march committees. OCLC locates one copy.

Description:
Chicago, 1979. Very good +. 166 loose black and white photographs, all measuring 8" x 10"; none are captioned. Generally very good plus or better. This is a collection of photographs by an important Black photographer, Tony Rhoden, depicting several events in the career of then-Alderman Eugene Sawyer. Sawyer was initially elected alderman of Chicago's 6th Ward in 1971 and by 1987 he was the longest serving African American alderman on the Chicago City Council. After the sudden death of Mayor Harold Washington, Sawyer ultimately became Chicago's second Black mayor after a special city council election. These photos document several events of Sawyer's work as alderman and while none are captioned, several of the events are easily identifiable based on clues within the photos. The photos are in nine distinct series, eight of which are dated. 15 photographs have a March 1, 1977 stamp and depict an event for the Sixth Ward Regular Democratic Association [SWRDA] at a cafeteria or banquet hall called… Read More

Washington DC: Program Guide Project of the Comittee for the March on Washington, Inc, 1993. Very good +. 10 ¾" x 8". Stapled wrappers. pp. 96. Very good plus with light wear and light toning at extremities. This is the program guide for the 1993 March. Its first page is a strongly worded reflection of the LGBTQ community as well as its demands, and stating that "every out lesbian, gay, and bi is a hero." It contains a number of full page ads with position statements, a guide to issues that needed to pushed in Congress and a step-by-step guide on how attendees could help the cause. Several pages are devoted to short biographies of all the rally speakers, and around 30 pages are used to detail an hour by hour description of all the different events. Interspersed throughout are dozens of advertisements, a few maps and a short history of the event. Surprisingly scarce with OCLC locating eight institutions and none in the trade as of October 2019.

Description:
Washington DC, 1964. 4 1/8" x 3". 16 loose black and white photos. Fine with light edge wear. This is a group of black and white photos taken of a television screen showing the second inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson. Most of them show close-ups of either the President or Hubert Humphrey, with a couple showing them together. One photo shows Humphrey with his hand raised while he is being sworn in as Vice President. On January 20, 1965, LBJ's inauguration drew a crowd estimated at 1.2 million people, the largest in history until Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration with an estimated 1.8 million people. He delivered a 22 minute inaugural speech that prompted audience applause eleven times. Focusing on domestic affairs, he said: "In a land of great wealth, families must not live in hopeless poverty. In a land rich in harvest, children just must not go hungry. In a land of healing miracles, neighbors must not suffer and die untended. In a great land of learning and scholars, young people must be taught… Read More

Description:
[Columbus, Ohio?]: N.P., 1943. Good. Single sheet, folded thrice, measuring 6" x 4 1/8" folded, opens to 16½" x 12". One side contains an eight panel pamphlet, the other a small poster. Good: heavily worn with moderate dust soiling to cover panel; tiny separations at edges; a few holes at intersecting folds. This is a re-election campaign pamphlet targeted to African Americans created by either a Black author or an African American organization we cannot uncover. One side is a brochure with text that listed the general accomplishments of mayor Floyd F. Green, included a list of nine African Americans he appointed to government posts, and a short one page essay, "Our Place In Columbus." While we have learned nothing of the author, the title of the essay, along with text such as "no city has contributed more to the uplift of OUR race," leads us to believe that either Parker was African American, and/or the pamphlet was the product of a Black political organization. The opposite side is a poster… Read More
