Description:
Amsterdam: Gérard Th. Van Heusden, 1975 4to (31 cm), front., XVIII, 252 pp, 25 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "The group of Italian Renaissance bindings decorated with a plaquette of Apollo and Pegasus has attracted the attention of scholars and collectors since they were first noticed in print by Yhomas Frognall Dibdin in 1817. Anthony Hobson has submitted the 144 recorded volumes of the collection to close scrutiny. The owner proves to have been a young man whose name had not previously been mentioned in connection with the bindings. The author considers the circumstances and chronology of the library's formation and craftsmen who produced the bindings. Other topics include the relationship between binders and book trade in 16th century Italy and the choice of title and editions in the collection, in particular to what extent it was influenced by a taste for fine printing. The final chapter traces the dispercal of the libary." (from the publisher's description)

Description:
Harry N. Abrams, 1989 Square 4to (29 x 26.5 cm), 200 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (half-title slightly stained at the top). "This is the first major study of the sudden flowering of the art of bookbinding in France at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century-one of the richest and most exciting periods in the history of the decorative arts. The sixty years between 1880 and 1940 produced bookbinding's greatest modern masters and many of its most original and accomplished craftsmen and craftswomen. Spanning both Art Nouveau and Art Deco-the first organic and sinuous, the second bright, angular, and self consciously modern-it was a stellar period for ornamentation and design of all types. These custom-made bindings-more than 200 of which are reproduced here in glorious color illustrations-were created as precious works of art for the private libraries of wealthy bibliophiles." Description:
The British Library Publishing Division, 2011 4to (28.5 cm), 192 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). "From exquisite medieval bookbindings made of precious metals and jewels to the unique and highly imaginative creations of contemporary bookbinders, this book celebrates over 100 of the most beautiful bookbindings of the last 1000 years. Fully illustrated in colour, with specially commissioned studio photography, this book provides a visual overview of the development of this splendid art form. The book focuses on the craft of hand-bookbinding which existed until the Victorian era when mass-produced 'trade' bindings took over. Bookbinding as a craft form never disappeared, however, and the second half of the 20th century saw a significant revival. The introduction provides an engaging overview of the history and techniques of the craft and of its most important practitioners. Visually stunning, this book will have a wide appeal to anyone with an interest in visual… Read More

Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dust jacket frayed at extremities, small part missing from top, part missing from the back. Internally fine). "The tools used by binders to decorate the covers of a book are of three types -- small stamps, rolls and panels. The first two are impressed by hand; the third by a press. In his "English Blind-Stamped Bindings", Mr Oldham classified and illustrated the impressions made on English bindings with stamp and roll-tools. This companion volume gives the same treatment to panels, reproducing all that are known, and giving them intelligible system of classification". (from the publisher's description)
