A Story of Australian Painting

By Eagle, Mary & Jones, John

Macmillan, 1996. The Story of Australian Painting is over 500g & some 294 well-illustrated pp. The story that emerges is tantalising, beginning with the popular drawings of natural science by John Lewin, the first free artist to come to the colony, and continuing via the great landscape painters, the Heidleberg artists, the expatriates of the early twentieth century, to the cosmopolitan modernists of later decades - Fairweather, Cossington Smith, Purves Smith, Drysdale and finishing with bold works from Brack, Williams, Whiteley and Olsen. It tells the story of the famous - four works from Tom Roberts, two striking works from Arthur Streeton and also tells of the lives of the not-so-famous, but before-their-time and the little seen: from the simple, understated work arising out of Iso Rae, landscapes by Rupert Bunny. From the post-cubist nudes of Dorrit Black and flower paintings of Margaret Preston to the chaotic immediacy of the thirties' and forties' social realists, Vassilieff, Bergner and Tucker. Card Cover. Excellent/None issued. 25 Cm.

By Levy, Mervyn. (Introduction and notes by)

Jupiter Books, 1978. SELECTED PAINTINGS OF L.S. LOWRY: OILS AND WATERCOLOURS by Levy has 47 colour (full page) plates. Laurence Stephen "L.S." Lowry (1 November 1887 – 23 February 1976) was an English artist born in Stretford, Lancashire. Many of his drawings and paintings depict Pendlebury, where he lived and worked for more than 40 years, and also Salford and its surrounding areas. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men". He painted mysterious unpopulated landscapes, brooding portraits and the unpublished "marionette" works, which were only found after his death. Due to his use of stylised figures and the lack of weather effects in many of his landscapes he is sometimes characterised as a naïve stylist. Lowry rejected five honours during his life, including a knighthood in 1968, and consequently holds the record for the most rejected British honours. Lowry died of pneumonia at the Woods Hospital in Glossop, Derbyshire, on 23 February 1976, aged 88. He was buried in the Southern Cemetery in Manchester, next to his parents. He left estate valued at £298,459, and a considerable number of artworks by himself and others to Carol Ann Lowry, who, in 2001, obtained trademark protection of the artist's signature. Lowry left a cultural legacy, his works often sold for millions of pounds and inspired other artists. The Lowry in Salford Quays was opened in 2000 at a cost of £106 million; was named after him. Notable works include Going to the Match (1928) Coming from the Mill (1930) Industrial Landscape (1955) and Portrait of Ann (1957). Card Cover. Very Good/None issued. 29cm.

A very impressive indigenous art collection, colour illustrations of the works on sale plus accompanying info re the artists. Dr. Ian Bernadt is a voracious Aboriginal art collector whose love and dedication to his vocation is matched only by his unbridled excitement for his passion. With a lack of room to display the more than 500 works he has collected over the past 20 years, the vast majority have lain impenetrably stacked along walls throughout rooms at his home and surgeries, still wrapped in the bubble pack they were delivered in. His desire to have the works seen led him to begin donating many of his finest pieces to a number of Western Australian institutions. These have included including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and Murdoch, Edith Cowan and Curtain Universities. And he rather reluctantly decided to offer more than 200 pieces for sale through Mossgreen auctions. An inspiring series of indigenous works.. Card Cover. Excellent/None issued. 27.5cm.
