Complete with letterpress and half title pages plus a separate engraved title page to each volume; numerous engraved plates with original tissue guards (for collation see below). Contents generally very good with plates clean, minimal foxing to the odd page. Bound in full, contemporary tree calf; all edges rich gilt; original marbled end papers. Bindings good only, but carefully and professionally 'restored' using archival materials, some joints cracked but now stabilised and all boards remain firmly attached, leather chipped to head and tail of spines, corners somewhat worn but now strengthened, one title label missing. Overall a very good set. Collations as follows. pp. vol. I (1780/1781) 168 pages, 134 illustrations; vol. II (1780) 215 pages, 141 illustrations; vol. III. (1780), 204 pages, 130 illustrations; vol. IV (1780) 119 pages; 130 illustrations; vol. V (1780) 100 pages, 181 illustrations; vol. VI (1780) 96 pages, 144 illustrations; vol. VII (1780) 104 pages, 163 illustrations; vol. XII [1803] 5 & 48 pages, 9 & 34 plates; [Volume four in the above set was published without the engraved titlepage. The engraved title pages in vols. I & VIII bear the date 1781, all other engraved title pages are undated other that vol. XII which shares the same 1803 date as the letterpress title page. Kendal: Printed by T. Wilson A HANDSOME COMPLETE SET OF THE SCARCE FIRST SERIES IN MATCHING CALF BINDINGS. Excellent local provenance - from the Library of the Lakeland Novelist Hugh Walpole with his bookplate. The half-title to vol. I states "Only 150 Copies Printed." Illustrations throughout including mounted real photographs (e.g. frontispiece plate to vol. I); folding charts, diagrams and maps, and a few coloured illustrations. Bound half polished calf bindings which are more or less uniform; seemingly a few have been bound up later to match; five decorated raised bands; title and volume number labels to the second and third compartments; marbled cover boards; bindings very good and strong, a little rubbing and a few small scuff marks. Contents clean and tight; minimal spotting to the occasionaly page, a few volumes with small discreet stamp to the verso of the title page; a couple of endpapers with ghosting from previous bookplate, otherwise unmarked. Provenance: with the attractive small burgundy bookplate of Hugh Walpole of Brackenburn, Keswick to the front end paper of each volume bar one. An excellent set of the scarce first series.. First Edition. Half Leather. Very Good. 8vo.

The first five volumes of the Palestine Exploration Fund Annual (1911-1927) including volume III Annual 1914-1915, the first of Lawrence's works to appear in book form (O'Brien A004). B/w plates (several in colour), folding plans and diagrams, in-text illustrations. An ex-library set with a few scattered stamps, but these are contemporary and not necessarily unattractive, engraved bookplates (by Mary Gibbs, dated 1907) of the Carnegie Library, Torquay to the front paste-downs; pocket to the rear end papers, but these were reference only and not lent out, consequently the pages are clean and crisp. Original buckram-backed grey cloth bindings, gilt lettering to the spines; good and strong with a little general wear and some rubbing to the head/tails of the spines. A good to very good set. A very good clean copy more or less free from the usual foxing; pp. [8], 62 [4]; 35 full page plates, some in colour (chromolithographs and hand-coloured) and some folding, including large folding frontispiece of the author and his wife on Prospect Tower. List of subscribers loosely inserted; errata, notes. Original plum cloth binding with blind stamped decoration, gilt lettering to the spine; very good with a little general wear, faded to the spine, some uneven fading to the boards. Contents clean and tight, original pale yellow coated endpapers, no inscriptions or annotation, a couple of nicks to edge of folds of frontispiece, minimal spotting. Notwithstanding the mottling to the cloth boards, an excellent copy, much cleaner than is usual for this title.. First Edition. Hardback. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Folio.
