A copy with excellent provenance [see below] and Inscribed by the editor to the half title page "From the Editor July 1882"; pp. viii, 134. Bound in contemporary or near contemporary half green calf with gilt lettering to the spine, green cloth boards. Binding very good and strong, a little faded to spine. Contents clean and tight, marbled endpapers, original printed blue wrappers bound in at the rear, a couple of ink spots to the title page. Provenance: from the library of Sir George Taylor, with his attractive bookplate to the front end paper: born Edinburgh 1904, obtained a first class degree from Edinburgh University, went on to become the Keeper of Botany, British Museum; Director of Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, general plant collector and botanist. Groningen: The New England Unit of the Herb Society of America, 1983. A fine association copy from the library of W. T. Stearn with three inserted letters; a gift inscription to Stearn from the Editor Lillian Sparrow Barrow to the end paper dated 3 October 1967. The first letter is a typescript (not signed) from Stearn to Mrs R.S. Barrow dated 8th November 1967, tipped on the rear end paper, in which he politely points out a small error in the book. The second letter is 3 sides autographed and signed from Lillian S Barrow to Stearn, dated 14 November 1967 and responds among other items to the error; the third letter is typed, signed, from Mary Lines Wellman to Stearn and inquires about herb books with reference to Greece. 76 pages, illustrations. Green cloth hardback binding very good with minimal wear only. Contents clean and tight. A very good copy. An English translation of the original French edition of 1731, with all woodengraving illustrations reproduced. [Provenance: from the library of Prof. William Stearn, "doyen of British botanists" who wrote c. 500 papers and books, including the classic "Botanical Latin". The later edition of 1687, (the first edition was published in 1664); pp. [2 - blank leaf], [8 - preliminaries], 363, [1 blank page], [20 - Alphabetical Table], [8 - Books, Printed for and Sold by Obadiah Blagrave]; engraved frontispiece plate, title page. Contemporary full calf binding with some rubbing and scuffing, front joint professionally and inconspicuoulsy strengthened, a little chipped to the head/tail of the spine. Contents complete, some general reading wear with a little fraying/chipping to the edges of some leaves but not affecting text (T2 with fore-edge cropped, but this is perhaps an original paper error - no loss of words), some browning and staining, light fading and abrasion to text to lower right corner of the title page. Provenance: Lady Wolryche (early signature to the front free end paper); R. Manby & Thomas Datchet (signatures on front blank dated 1745 and 1763 respectively). Very scarce, particularly with the charming frontispiece plate and the publisher's adverts (all copies we have located at auction have been missing the frontispiece plate) Referenced by: Wing (2nd ed.), T3329; Henrey, 363; Hunt, 379 and ESTC R30175. Full Leather. Very Good. 8vo.
