A BOUND COLLECTION OF 47 LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES OF ANIMALS [A New Progressive Drawing Book of Animals?]

By Fairland, Thomas

London: McCormick, J., 1832. A collection of 47 fine lithographic plates of predominently animals - single subjects and multiple vignette studies of horses, horseman, dogs, cattle and hunting scenes, each approximately.185 x 270mm. All seem to be after Thomas Fairland and published by J. McCormick of 147 Strand, London and printed/lithographed by various printers (see below). The plates are dated 1832, 1833, 1834 or undated. No title page, though probably not missing - see note below. Contemporary binding of half tan calf over blue marbled boards, gilt rules to spine, but untitled. Some general wear and rubbing, but strong, leather chipped to head/tail of the spine, lower corners worn. Contents good, original end papers, a little browning, spotting and foxing, four plates with ink stains to lower outside corner, a few short splits at sheet gutter edges, a few plates trimmed close to titles or titles trimmed, some plates with a little surface dirt. Overall very good. It is unlikely that this book was ever bound with a title page as it would seem that this is very much a collection of plates subsequently bound up. At the back of the album are a number of single-dog portraits with extensive landscape backgrounds - the style of these plates and their titles being distinctly different from the rest. Also, the fact that the plates were produced over, at least, a three year period might suggest they were issued separately. However, 'A New Progressive Drawing Book of Animals', a very rare title published by McCormick in 1833 appears similar though the only copy that we are aware of had only 34 plts. Those plates that are dated are bound in chronological order. The plates were variously printed/engraved by Lefevre & Kohler, or W. Clerk of 41 Dean St, Soho, or C. Hallmandel, or A. Ducote's Lithog' , 70 St Martin's Lane. [Provenance: with the armorial bookplate of Henry Birkbeck to the front end paper: Norfolk family of High House estate at West Acre, Norfolk, with Grade I listed house built in 1756.] . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Book.

Mammals of Australia Vol. II (Kangaroos & Wallabies)

By Gould, John

Melbourne: Hill House, 2001. First limited facsimile edition thus, in original box, fine. 51 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. Original red Japanese Saifu cloth gilt. Fine condition with minimal wear only, contents clean and tight, unmarked, no inscriptions. One of a series of remarkably exact same-size facsimiles of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale, and purportedly only 150 copies of this volume were produced. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." Please see the other Gould titles we are offering in this impressive edition.A POSTAL SURCHARGE MAY APPLY ON THIS HEAVY BOOK.. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Elephant Folio.
