THE NATURALIST'S LIBRARY [complete in 40 volumes]

By JARDINE, SIR WILLIAM; Robert Hamilton

Edinburgh: W. H. Lizars, 1843. The Naturalist's Library, complete in 40 vols, each with engraved additional titles (some hand-coloured) and portrait frontispieces, plus 1,183 engraved plates of 1,214 (so missing 31), of which the majority hand-coloured, mostly with original tissue guards (for details see full collation at end). Attractively bound in contemporary green half-calf, with red title labels to the spine; very good and strong with light rubbing only. All edges marbled, original plain endpapers. Contents generally very good and clean, no inscriptions, several tissue guards missing or torn, one or two books with gatherings out of line, 3 text leaves missing overall, some plates trimmed, particularly in vol. 21 humming birds which affects part of the image. Generally very good. Bibliographic note. A work notorious for its collation regarding plates, even sets seemingly dating from the same year have different numbers of plates. We have methodically counted all the plates in this set and have compared with the contents pages - details are given below. Some of the missing plates from this set were probably never bound-in, in the first instance and others have been subsequently removed. We have priced the set very competitively to take account of the few missing plates and other faults. FULL COLLATION AS FOLLOWS. Vol. 1 (Mammalia vol xi): portrait; h/c tp; 35 h/c plates.
