Fine contemporary binding of panelled calf (speckled) with four raised bands to the spines, gilt ownership stamp of I. Phellipps Y to the front panel. Red title label to the spine. Binding very good and strong, short cracks to head of front and rear joints, and leather slightly chipped to bottom of spine. Contents clean and tight, some pages a little toned, good margins. A very good copy. Provenance: from Newton Surmaville in Somerset. This house was originally bought by Robert Harbin, a mercer of Blandford in 1608 from Joseph Compton. Robert Harbin rebuilt the house, completed in 1612. The house had remained in the family until 2007 when the last member of the family Sophia Wyndham died aged 97. The contents of the house were also sold in 2007, including the library which had remained untouched for hundreds of years. Many of the volumes of classics, theology and history belonged to the Rev. John Phelipps (second son of Edward Phelipps of Montacute). Vicar of Yeovil. 1756-66 and bear his gilt bookstamp, as is the case with this book.. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 8vo (13 X 21cm). London: Charles Griffon, 1932. A wonderful copy of this rare book with excellent association. It is insribed and signed by the author to his daughter "To my darling Mary from her father A. Trevosso Hocking Feb 4th 1932. Also tipped in is an original typed letter, signed from Anton Lang (who wrote the foreword for the book) to Hocking on Lang's headed paper and dated April 4 1932. In the letter Lang thanks Hocking for a gift of the book and makes "the vivid connection with the Oberammergau Passion Play..." [Lang, German studio potter and actor in the Oberammergau Passion Play in which he played Jesus Christ in 1900, 1910, and 1922. He was the Prologue Speaker in 1930 and again in the Jubilee Production of 1934.] The dust jacket is a little worn and dust marked, now protected in a clear removable archival sleeve. Original blue cloth binding with glit lettering, very good with minimal wear. Top edge gilt. Original black -coated end papers. Contents clean and tight, the Anton Lang letter is in very good condition, though a little worn with short nicks to the fore-edge which is slightly proud of the book pages. Pages clean and crisp. A very good association copy of a rare book.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Good Plus. 8vo.
