Engraved bookplate of Frederic Rowland Marvin to front pastedown. Bit of minor fraying to spine ends; a bright, Near Fine copy. Description:
Kenwood [NY], 1897. First Edition. Octavo; self-wraps; 8pp. A fine copy. Replies, by a former resident, to "Monsieur [Auguste?] Fabre", answering questions regarding the disbanding of the Oneida Community. "I believe that the first cause of the dissolution of the Oneida Community was the plan and purpose of God...a second cause was the intense opposition or antagonism between the spirit of the Community, and the 'vain manner of life handed down from our fathers' (1 Peter, i,18)." Seymour, who was a resident at Oneida as early as 1854, was one of the few loyalists who followed John Humphrey Noyes to Canada following the community's dissolution in 1881. He died in 1907. A rather uncommon Oneida pamphlet - not in Dare, American Communes to 1860; OCLC gives ten locations.

Description:
Putney, VT, 1843-45. Unbroken run of forty-eight biweekly issues, comprising Vol. III, no. 1 (Feb. 15, 1843) to Vol. IV, no.24 (Feb. 22, 1845). Folio (42cm) In contemporary binding of quarter sheep over marbled boards. Expected external rubbing and wear; internally crisp, clean and unmarked. Bi-monthly organ of Noyes's community of Bible Communists, a successor publication to The Witness. The paper was primarily an outlet for Noyes's peculiar brand of theocratic philosophy, which incorporated a blend of Free Love and so-called "male-continence" (i.e., intercourse without ejaculation); The Perfectionist was distributed nationally and served as a recruiting tool for the community until its members were driven out of Vermont in 1848. The community re-formed in Oneida, New York in 1848, where it survived until the 1880s. A substantial remainder of this and many other Oneida publications came on the market in the mid-1970s, but cohesive runs have grown increasingly uncommon in commerce. DARE 1518.

Apparently a mixed issue: covers are Gill's third variant (without the crossed-out price), but title page (rules) and pagination (p.5) conform to the earlier state. Since the wrappers on our copy are undersized by about 1/4", it seems plausible that this copy may have been made up using a remainder of the earliest state of the text with the later issue wrappers. Includes many historical photographs, a history of the colony, and speeches delivered on the occasion by John Root, Axel Gabrielson, Eric Johnson, and others. The Bishop Hill Colony was founded by a sect of Swedish pietists under the leadership of Eric Jansson, in 1846. Jansson was shot and killed in a dispute with John Root (the current volume's author) in 1850, but the community survived and still exists today, albeit shed of its pietist and communal roots. Final leaf with advertisements for the "Rockcliff Castle and Free Library" (recto) and an order stub for a proposed publication, "Cause & Effect." Eccentric Progressive-era vernacular agrarian-utopian socialist tract. Little can be learned about the author; his sole recorded publication was a history of the Osage Indian Nation [Pawhuska: 1906], in whose introduction he identifies himself as a native of Virginia and a graduate of an extended "course of study" during which he "took in some of the best literary instutions of the 'North' and 'South'." Dickerson was also the editor of a progressive weekly newspaper, "World Wide War" (1915-1917). He appears in Territorial news reports as early as 1907, where he is identified in police reports as a "Baptist preacher" charged with setting a farmer's barn on fire.
