Lausanne: Société Typographique, 1777. Second Edition. Two volumes in one; small 12mo (16cm.); slightly later paper-covered boards, manuscript private library spine labels, all edges speckled red; [2],viii,248; [2],iv,250pp. Spine a bit sunned, corners bumped, light spotting to boards, tiny rubberstamps of a Donaueschingen library to both title page versos, else a Near Fine, internally fresh copy, half titles present. First published one year prior, in 1776. Both a critique and history of European inequality by the French philosopher deeply influenced by the works of John Locke. Described as an "avant-garde thinker of utopian socialism" (Sophus Reinert and Steven Kaplan, eds., "The Economic Turn" (2019), p. [339]), the Abbé de Mably (1709-1785) roundly rejected any institution that could reduce the well-being of one in favor of another, among these the concept of private property. Description:
[Berlin: 1848]: Vereins Buchdruckerei. Broadside, 27cm x 20cm (ca 10-3/4" x 8"). Printed in blackletter on white wove stock. Slightly toned, with old vertical and horizontal fold-lines; creased at margins; Very Good. Satirical broadside in the form of a fictional speech by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, in which he (ironically) expresses support for the demands made by liberal parliamentarians at the May 18th Parliamentary Assembly in Frankfurt-am-Main. These included expanded rights for the underprivileged classes (including, most importantly, universal male suffrage); attenuation of executive power; the election of a permanent German parliament, and monetary reforms including a unified German currency. The great wave of liberal revolt that washed over the European Continent in 1848 proved short-lived; by 1851, most of the newly-established liberal régimes had been quashed by reactionary movements, with radical leaders either imprisoned, murdered, or driven into exile. Out of this crucible would arise… Read More

[Wien]: Gredruckt bei Joseph Ludwig, [1848]. First Edition. Broadside (50.75x42cm.) printed blackletter; previous folds, two corners neatly clipped not approaching text, else Very Good to Near Fine. Proposal issued shortly before the Vienna Uprising of October, 1848, during which violence broke out between the laboring class of the city and the Hapsburg army as the latter was trying to leave in order to quell the Hungarian Revolution. Löve, most likely a university student at the time, proposes that Vienna would best be defended if the walls surrounding the inner city were to be dismantled (they would be irreparable if damaged by enemy bombardment) and the moat filled in for building development. Unlocated in OCLC or KVK, though noted in James E. Walsh, 1848 Austrian Revolutionary Broadsides and Pamphlets (1976), p. 143, dating the broadside to June 31, 1848. Löve issued another five or six titles listed in Walsh, one signed in type "Redacteur [I] der Studentenzeitung," (editor of the student… Read More
