New York: The Hour Publishers, 1952. First Edition. 12mo. Staple-bound pamphlet; pictorial card wrappers; 16pp. Mild external soil; Very Good or better. Exposé of one of the major intelligence leaks of the early Cold War, which resulted when Major General Robert W. Grow, at this time the Military Attaché to the U.S. Embassy at Moscow, allowed his private diary - filled with classified and private confidential information, including passages that suggested the United States was planning an imminent military advance on the Soviet Union - to fall into the hands of East German agents. Though the slip-up was accidental, Grow was court-martialed and relieved of his command.

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, N.d. [ca 1940s]. Reprint. Octavo, red cloth; 517pp. Very Good. An undistinguished reprint, except that this copy bears a taped-in accession slip from the Danbury [CT] Federal Correctional Institution: "This item has been approved for quarters for the following inmate only [completed in type]: Name: Marzani. No. 7333-Ct. Date: January 15, 1950." Signed in ink by William Berg, Supervisor of Education. Carl Marzani (1912-1994), a CPUSA organizer and veteran of the Spanish Civil War, became the central figure in a noted 1947 espionage trial when it was discovered that he had concealed his Communist Party membership during a three-year period of employment with the OSS (precursor to the modern CIA) during the Second World War. Marzani was convicted under the Espionage Act and served nearly three years in Danbury Prison. His radical activities did not diminish while he was behind bars; in fact in 1950 he was sentenced to seven months in solitary confinement after being caught… Read More

Description:
Moscow, 1972. First Edition. Octavo. Cloth-backed pictorial paper-covered boards; 348, (3)pp; portraits, plates. Slight external rubbing and shelfwear; corners nudged; still a solid, Very Good copy. Apparently the first full-length Soviet biography of the Argentinian revolutionary martyr and hero of the Cuban Revolution, well-illustrated with photographic portraits and plates. According to Costa Rican investigative journalist Marjorie Ross, "Lavretsky" was a pseudonym for Soviet master-spy Iosif Grigulevich, who got his start as a hired hit-man against Trotskyist and Anarchist factions in the Spanish Civil War. She pegs him as the never-identied "third man" in the assassination of Leon Trotsky; and during the Cold War, posing as an international coffee expert, Grigulevich reputedly penetrated the highest levels of government and culture in Costa Rica, Chile, and Mexico, during which time he was also the Kremlin's "handler" for Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and Mexican painter José Siqueiros (see… Read More

Description:
New York: People's Artists, 1953. First Edition. Octavo. Staple-bound pamphlet; illustrated card wrappers; 23pp. Presentation copy, inscribed by Edith Segal in October, 1953: "To Lil, Moishe, & Paul, warmest regards and heads up - Edith." Moderate cover wear; mild soiling within; Very Good. A collection of Segal's proletarian hymns, following her widely-issued "Give Us Your Hand," which had been issued the year before to raise money for Ethel and Julius Rosenberg's defense fund. The current volume contains a number of memorial poems to the Rosenbergs, but is composed primarily of works on the theme of Morton Sobell, an accused Soviet spy who had been swept up in the course of the Rosenberg affair. We have beeen unsuccessful in identifying "Lil, Moishe, and Paul," but from the tenor of Segal's inscription we would assume some connection to Sobell.
