Printed on both sides of a single sheet of newsprint; recto reprints a petition originally published in the New York Times for Feb 22, 1962; verso is commentary by Circuit Riders, Inc., a Cincinnati-based Christian-Nationalist conservative movement. Horizontal fold; mild toning to margins; Very Good. The petition, signed by some six hundred public figures including Noam Chomsky, James Baldwin, Denise Levertov, Martin Luther King, Jr., and many others, calls for the immediate abolition of the House Un-American Activities Committee, accusing its members of dividing the citizenry, denying free speech, and distracting the public from matters of real political importance. A detailed and scholarly investigation of Shahn's life and work during the Cold War period; probably the best critical study of his work after Rodman's 1951 biography. In her note, the author states that she is "pleased with the way it turned out, although...as with any book there are some things I would do differently if I were to do it over again...I hope I have given a sense of the strength of Ben's commitment to both his political & aesthetic ideals during this period.

A remarkable Cold War document, written by the career Soviet apologist (editor of the pro-Soviet journal "Northern Notes") Dyson Carter. Carter contrasts - at considerable length - the realities of the post-Sputnik USSR against the mythically primitive culture caricatured in the mainstream American media - a caricature which he claims Americans have been intentionally "brainwashed" into believing, in the interests of maintaining popular antagonism between the two countries. The source of this disinformation, according to Carter, is none other than John Foster Dulles, whose motives apparently stemmed from his thwarted ambition to assume financial control of Russia in the months following the October Revolution. Broadside printing, possibly issued as an extra to the Daily Worker (though this is nowhere stated) of the CPUSA's 1948 Platform. The text calls for general reforms in the areas of international relations, the rights of workers, civil rights (including the right to profess communist beliefs), race relations and electoral laws. Within these categories demands are sometimes quite specific; e.g., "Abolish the un-American Committee [and] withdraw the indictments against the 12 Communist leaders;" and, "We demand that the Ingram family be freed and adequately compensated for the ordeals to which they have been subjected." Fundraising pamphlet issued by the Committee on behalf of Morton Sobell, convicted in 1951 of conspiracy to commit espionage for the Soviet Union toward the end of World War II while working for General Electric. Sentenced to 30 years in prison, Sobell served seventeen, the first twelve in Alcatraz. Date of pamphlet based on reference to the recent executions of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in 1953.

New York: Civil Rights Congress, [1946]. First printing. Octavo; original tape-backed printed paper wrappers; 56pp. Mild soil and toning to wrappers, else a Near Fine copy. The defendants had been indicted for violation of the Smith Act, accused, by dint of their association with the Communist Party, of advocating the violent overthrow of the United States. They were convicted, but the convictions were overturned in 1957.
